Durban - The first Test match between South Africa and England is very much in the balance after Sunday's second day at Kingsmead.
The Proteas were up for it early on, with Morne Morkel claiming four of the six England wickets to fall in the morning session as the hosts were dismissed for 303.
At stumps the Proteas were 137/4, with Dean Elgar (67*) and Temba Bavuma (10*) at the crease.
Morkel (4/76) ripped through the England batting line-up in an extended morning session, claiming the scalps of Nick Compton (85), Ben Stokes (21), Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes (both 0) as the Proteas wrapped up the innings before lunch.
The lanky 31-year-old displayed the aggression, accuracy and application that was so evident in last month's series defeat in India while Dale Steyn picked up another wicket to finish with figures of 4/70.
The Proteas were met with some resistance in the form of a 36-run 10th wicket stand between Stuart Broad (32) and Steven Finn (12), but captain Hashim Amla would still have been happy with the performance of his bowlers.
With the sun out and the pitch responding accordingly, South Africa got off to the worst possible start.
Stiaan vaan Zyl, under pressure to cement his place as an opener in the side, left an in-swinger from Broad - just the second ball of the innings - that clipped the top of off stump.
That brought Amla to the wicket, and when Broad had him caught behind for just seven the score was 14/2.
There would have been scary memories of India, but the recovery from AB de Villiers and Elgar was gritty and effective.
The pair put on 86 before De Villiers (49) feathered a length delivery from Broad to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow at a time when he had looked completely in control.
That gave England - and Broad - another lift, but Elgar was standing firm.
He was joined by Faf du Plessis, who had a bit to prove in this Test match.
It was not to be.
The Proteas' T20 captain came running down the wicket at an uninspiring delivery from Ali in the 40th over.
Du Plessis missed while playing across the line, and the ball brushed the top of the bail, sending him on his way for two.
Temba Bavuma was next in, and along with the unflappable Elgar saw the Proteas through the final hour of the day.
Play will start at 09:30 on Monday morning.
