Cape Town - Ex-Proteas skipper, Graeme Smith has been named an honourary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)

Smith was elected along with former Australian spinner, Tim May with the MCC awarding their positions "in recognition of their outstanding achievements in cricket".

At the age of 22, Smith became South Africa’s youngest ever captain, appointed to the position after the fallout of a failed World Cup campaign in 2003 under Shaun Pollock.

He proved himself at international level, making 27 centuries and scoring 9,265 Test runs at an average of 48.25, ending third on South Africa's all-time Test run scorers list.

In his first tour of England in 2003, Smith hit two double-centuries in his first two Tests and he broke the highest score achieved by an overseas player at Lords with his 259 surpassing a 73-year record held by Don Bradman.

Smith was named one of Wisden's Cricketer's of the Year in 2004 for his feats.

But it's not only in the Test area where Smith excelled. He played 197 ODI's scoring 6989 runs at an average of 37.98 including 10 centuries.

Smith retired in 2014.
