Cape Town - While some cricket lovers around the world might argue, for South Africans (including this one), there is no doubt that Dale Steyn is the greatest fast bowler of his generation.

And he has the numbers to prove it.

Steyn, who announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, struggled with injury towards the end of his red ball career.

A shoulder injury alone kept him out of the game for a period of a year before he returned to Test cricket towards the end of 2018.

Had he played more, who knows just how many wickets the "Phalaborwa Express" would have ended up with.

Stats don't lie!

A look at the stats sees Steyn right up their with the greatest fast bowlers ever to steam in with a red cherry in their hands.

He played 93 Test matches for the Proteas sending down 18 608 deliveries between 2004 and 2019.

Those resulted in 439 Test wickets, taking Steyn to 8th on the all-time list of Test wicket takers and the most by a South African. Steyn captured five wickets in an innings on 26 occasions and 10 wickets in a match five times.

But it was his average of 22.95 and his strike rate of 42.3 balls per wicket that showed Steyn's undeniable class.

Of bowlers to have played 20 Test matches or more, Steyn' strike rate puts him third behind fellow countryman Kagiso Rabada and Sidney Barnes, who turned out for England in the early 1900s.

He was born to get batsman out, and that's exactly what he did... time and time again.

The numbers certainly don't lie!
