AB, Elgar steady Proteas ship

Durban - The Proteas were 55/2 at tea on the second day of the first Test against England at Kingsmead on Sunday.

Having taken six wickets in the morning session to bowl England out for 303, the Proteas were off to the worst possible start when they had out-of-sorts opener Stiaan van Zyl back in the hut after just the second ball of the innings.

Stuart Broad had started one outside off-stump that swung back into Van Zyl. The left hander did not read the line at all, offering no shot as the ball clipped the top of off and he was sent packing without troubling the scorers.

Captain Hashim Amla was next in, but he never got going.

England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow dropped Amla when he was on just two, but it wouldn't hurt too much.

Just a few overs later Broad had his second of the day when he had Amla caught behind for seven.

AB de Villiers (26*) and Dean Elgar (22*) then steadied the ship for South Africa, moving through to tea relatively untroubled as the Proteas looked to recover from their woeful start.

The pair had put on 41 by the end of the middle session.
