Amla scoops ANN7 award

Cape Town - Cricket South Africa Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat, on Sunday congratulated Proteas Test Captain, Hashim Amla, on receiving the Sports Person of the Year award at the inaugural ANN7 South African of the Year event in Sandton on Saturday night.

Amla was nominated along with a host of other local sporting stars, but the public vote went in his favour after a three-week long voting period.

Amla, having just played in the historic win over Australia in Harare, could not be present in Sandton to receive the award personally, but did send a broadcast message through from Zimbabwe where the Proteas were celebrating their triumph.

“Our world renowned stars deserve these accolades. Our warmest congratulations to Hashim on being the first recipient of this prestigious award,” said CSA CE, Haroon Lorgat.

“To be recognised by sports fans as the South African Sports Person of the Year tells its own story of the worth of Hashim and the impact he has on all South Africans. We are truly proud to have among our Proteas, world stars of the calibre of Hashim. He is a truly great role model,” added Lorgat.

Lorgat also thanked ANN7 for this wonderful initiative.

“Credit must go to ANN7 who celebrated their first anniversary in style and their foresight to recognise South Africans that contribute to making the Rainbow Nation a truly wonderful country to live in must be applauded.”
