Plaudits for De Kock, Proteas

Cape Town - Cricket South Africa on Tuesday congratulated the Proteas on their ODI series victory over Zimbabwe. The Proteas clinched the series when they won the second match at the Queen’s Ground in Bulawayo today by 61 runs to go 2-0 up in the three-game series.

The final match takes place on Thursday.

“This was an expected series win and continues the momentum the Proteas have been enjoying this year,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “They have now won four of their last five ODI matches, all away from home, and they will face a sterner test in the triangular series that follows next week.

“This series has been timely as it has given our selectors the chance to look at some other players on the periphery of the squad. It has been worthwhile in observing the way they have slotted into the Proteas environment.

“I would like to single out and congratulate Quinton de Kock who today equalled the world record of taking the fewest number of innings to reach 1 000 ODI runs.”

The 21-year-old De Kock became the fourth player in history to reach 1 000 ODI runs in only 21 innings.

West Indies great Viv Richards completed the feat against England in Sydney in 1980, and the other two batsmen to have got there in as few knocks are South African-born England stars Jonathan Trott (against Ireland, Bangalore, 2011) and Kevin Pietersen (against India, Faridabad, 2006).

Of the quartet, De Kock is third fastest in time taken to get there since debut, having needed one year and 212 days to get to 1 000, behind only current outcast from England’s plans Pietersen (one year and 123 days) and health-related absentee Trott (one year and 187 days).
