Domingo named Proteas coach

Russell Domingo (Gallo)
Cape Town - Cricket South Africa on Saturday announced current assistant coach Russell Domingo as the new head coach of the Proteas in all three formats of the game.

He succeeds Gary Kirsten who will stand down after the Proteas’ campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament in England and Wales next month. Domingo already has responsibility for coaching the Proteas Blue Label Telecoms T20 International squad.

Domingo, 38, is one of the youngest persons to become head coach of the Proteas but he has already built up an impressive CV of experience. As franchise coach he led the Chevrolet Warriors to the domestic limited overs double and it was during his franchise coaching career that he employed Kirsten as a batting consultant.

His first assignment will be when the Proteas travel to Sri Lanka in July for five ODI’s and three T20 International matches.

“We have no doubt that Russell will do an excellent job,” commented CSA president and Board of Directors chairperson Chris Nenzani.

“He has built up an excellent career record over a short period of time and he has played an important part in the success that Gary has achieved for us over the past two years.

“Continuity is very important both in terms of player selection and the management team and this will enable us to have a seamless transition from one coach to another.

“Russell inherits a world-class group of players who have performed consistently at the highest level and he will continue to build the Proteas as a world-class brand.”

Domingo commented: “This is a very big day in my life. It has to be the highlight in anybody’s coaching career to be given the honour and responsibility of being put in charge of your national side.

“I feel it has come at the right stage of my coaching career, having spent the last two years working with Gary.

“I would like to thank the Board of Cricket South Africa for the faith they have shown in me and also the many people who have helped me to live my coaching dream.”
