Biff back from injury

Cape Town - Graeme Smith got his season started when he turned out for Claremont in a WPCA T20 competition match against Bellville at Constantia on Saturday.

It was his first game of cricket since being injured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and part of the limited preparation he will have ahead of the limited overs series against Australia.

He had the opportunity to bat for seven overs, scoring 20 runs (2 fours) before being dismissed.

“It was great to be back in the middle,” commented Smith. “I hit some nice straight and cover drives and it was also important to start running sharply between the wickets again.”

Smith’s injury is completed healed and he is able to bat without any discomfort.

He will play again for Claremont next weekend and there is also the possibility of his having a T20 game in midweek for the Western Province amateur side.

The Protea Castle Lager squad for the limited overs series against Australia will be named next week.

In terms of selection protocol all players have to be cleared for selection by the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Medical Committee before the squad is submitted to CSA CEO Gerald Majola for final approval. As many of the players are currently in India this may take longer than usual.
