Amla, Philander up for awards

Cape Town - Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander have been recognised for their stellar performances over the past 12 months by receiving dual finalist nominations for the South African Sports Awards (SASA) to be made next month.

The Proteas pair is on the final short list of five for the Sportsman of the Year award and on the final short list of seven for the Sports Star of the Year.

Proteas coach Gary Kirsten is on the final list for the Coach of the Year while the Proteas have been nominated for Team of the Year after their brilliant run in test cricket which culminated in their taking the No 1 ranking from England during their successful tour to that country.

“These nominations are very well deserved,” commented CSA Acting CEO Jacques Faul, “and confirmation of the high regard in which our national representatives are held. The nomination of Hashim and Vernon for the Sports Star of the Year award is particularly pleasing as the voting was done by the general public and these are the essential stakeholders of South African cricket.”
