Johannesburg - The South African national cricket team have done their homework properly and do not believe they will experience the same tasteless racist incidents that marred their tour to Australia four years ago.
SA coach Mickey Arthur said on Saturday on the team’s departure to Australia that logistical manager Gulam Rajah left two weeks ago on a scouting visit and to meet with Cricket Australia (CA) authorities.
“We had a few burning questions about the safety of our players, but Gulam said CA agreed to guarantee our safety.
“In the light of this I don’t expect any problems or that our players will be exposed to any tasteless incidents,” said Arthur.
From the word go on the previous tour, during matches the South African players were bombarded with racist remarks by spectators – some of whom allegedly were former South Africans.
And it wasn’t only players of colour who suffered. Shaun Pollock and some of the white players were also abused.
It was especially a problem during the first match in Perth, where a big community of former South Africans had settled.
According to Arthur Rajah discussed all the previous problems with CA and the Aussies assured him that everything possible would be done to prevent a recurrence.
