Warriors snatch 4-wicket win

Port Elizabeth -  The Chevrolet Warriors snatched a four-wicket win in their Standard Bank Pro20 match against the bizhub Highveld Lions at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The Warriors began the last over of their innings, bowled by Friedel de Wet, needing ten runs to win. Craig Thyssen took two runs off the first ball of the over before hitting a four off the second ball to reduce the deficit to four runs needed off four balls.

Two runs came off the third ball of the over before Thyssen hit a no-ball for four to take the Warriors to 127 for six to secure victory.

The Warriors had looked dead and buried on 70 for six in the 16th over but Johan Botha and Thyssen put on 57 runs off 25 balls to see their team home.

Botha ended unbeaten on 44 off 27 balls with three fours and two sixes while Thyssen struck a belligerent 23 not out off 14 balls.

Fast bowler Craig Alexander had a good game for the Lions finishing with figures of three for 14 off four overs.

Earlier, the Lions had stuttered to 123 for five off their allotted 20 overs.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat the Lions’ batsmen struggled to 59 for four in the 12th over.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Werner Coetsee (23) then combined to put on a 53-run fifth-wicket partnership to take the Lions to 112 in the 19th over before Coetsee was caught at deep square leg by Johan Botha off the bowling of left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell.

Van Jaarsveld, who came to the wicket with the Lions in trouble, played a circumspect innings as he ended unbeaten on 40 not out off 43 balls.

Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson was the main wicket-taker for the Warriors as he claimed figures of two for 20 off three overs while medium-pacer Justin Kreusch bowled economically to concede five runs off his two overs.
