Friend not being shunned

Johann de Jager

Bloemfontein – The absence of Quinton Friend from the Dolphins cricket team that will start its campaign against the Knights on Wednesday, is apparently not down to rumours that he intends moving to the City of Roses.

Sport24 is aware of negotiations between the fast bowler and the Knights, and eyebrows were raised when he was not included in the Dolphins’ 12-man squad this week.

Dolphins chief executive Jesse Chellan said that Friend’s omission did not have anything to do with that. He said that the player simply was not picked for their first two games.

Friend (28) did not play too well for the Dolphins in the previous blitz series, and only took two wickets. It is believed that he struggled again in the Dolphins’ training games.

Friend, who toured Sri Lanka with South Africa’s second string at the start of the season, is viewed by most experts as a first-class rather than a one-day player.

The Knights can provide testimony for that - Friend really gave them problems in a SuperSport match in Kimberley last season, taking 10 wickets in that match.

The home side were cruising to victory on 134/2, but were all out for 161 following some devastating bowling by Friend.

Sport24 understands that the Dolphins and Lions have also courted allrounder Dillon du Preez. However, the Natal side has said that they understood Du Preez was no longer available.

With all the drama behind the scenes, the game on Wednesday certainly won’t be a “Friend-ly”.
