Hendricks bowls Cobras to bonus point win

Cape Town - Beuran Hendricks nabbed five wickets as the Cape Cobras crushed the Titans by 113 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in their Momentum One-Day Cup match in Benoni on Friday.

After being asked to bat first, the Cape side posted 237/5 after a rain delay during their innings saw the match reduced to 42 overs per innings.

The rain delay meant the hosts were left to chase a Duckworth/Lewis amended score of 247 for victory.

But they slipped to 133 all out off 30.5 overs with left-arm quick Hendricks, who has only recently returned to full fitness, ending with the impressive figures of 5-31 while seamer Tshepo Moreki claimed 3-26.

The bonus-point win saw the Cobras extend their lead atop the standings as they seek to book a home final.

Justin Ontong and Dane Vilas provided the host’s innings with some late impetus as they blasted 69 runs for the fifth wicket off just six overs.

Ontong was in good form as he raced to 65 off 53 balls with five fours and two sixes, while Vilas was particularly destructive as he raced to 46 not out off just 23 deliveries with four fours and three sixes.

The pair’s aggressive partnership had been set up by a solid 53 off 79 balls from Omphile Ramela.

The Titans’ innings never really got going and they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Graeme van Buuren was the only batsman to really trouble the Cobras’ bowlers as he top-scored for the visitors with 40 off 36 balls.

But he was dismissed in the 21st over as the Titans’ innings fell away with five other batsmen reaching double figures but failing to go on to a big score.

The next best score after Van Buuren was just 14 from Theunis de Bruyn and Mangaliso Mosehle.
