Parnell sees Warriors to win

East London - An attractive half-century by Warne Parnell and a critical double-breakthrough by Basheer Walters propelled the Chevrolet Warriors to an emphatic 76-run win over the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras in their Momentum One-Day Cup match at Buffalo Park on Friday evening.

Parnell, with an attractive 62 off 63 balls with five fours and two sixes, set up a competitive 262 for eight for the hosts.

Walters, who was the pick of the Chevrolet Warriors attack, captured 3-23 in six overs to restrict the Cobras to 186. Andrew Birch, with 3-42 in 7.1 overs, was the best of the support cast, while Jon-Jon Smuts captured 2-31 in eight overs.

It was the Chevrolet Warriors’ first win in this season’s Momentum One-Day Cup competition.

An aggressive onslaught, led by Richard Levi, gave the visitors the early edge as they moved to 158 for four in the 30th over.

But an all too familiar middle-order collapse, engineered by Walters, gave the Chevrolet Warriors the edge as the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras slumped from 158 for four to 186 all out.

Levi had the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras off to a flyer in pursuit of the 262 for eight scored by the Chevrolet Warriors. Levi dominated the first two partnerships and hammered 58 off 52 balls with the left-handed Stiaan van Zyl for the second wicket.  Van Zyl holed out to Michael Price on the long-on boundary for 21 after he mistimed his aerial drive off the off-spinner Jon-Jon Smuts.

Justin Ontong, the skipper, joined Van Zyl in the pavilion on 88 for three after he was bowled by Birch for one.

Levi continued his leg-side dominated assault and moved impressively to 83 off 77 balls, with eleven fours and a six.

He miscued a hoist over long-off and was caught by Colin Ingram on the long-off boundary off Smuts as the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras slumped to 133 for four in the 25th over.

But the self-inflicted middle-order malaise of soft dismissals which has become an alarming pattern during their early campaign was again evident. The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras slipped from 158 for four to 186 all out.

Dane Villas, hoping to cart a delivery by the part-time leg-spinner Ingram over the inner ring, was stumped by Davy Jacobs for 16.

Walters’ double breakthrough in the 33rd over then accounted for Justin Kemp (2) and Yaseen Vallie as they slipped to 164 for seven. He bowled Kemp, and trapped Vallie in front for 30.

Earlier, a disciplined performance by the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, spearheaded by Johann Louw, kept the hosts subdued for 47 overs. Parnell, who had played the role of accumulator for most of his innings, tormented the visitors with a flurry of boundaries in the final three overs. He and Birch managed 46 in those three overs.
