Newlands ‘2nd best in world’

2012-05-10 15:09

Cape Town - The world’s biggest cricket magazine has branded Newlands the second best ground in the world to watch Test cricket at.

In a lead-story survey published in the May edition of UK-based The Cricketer - formerly The Wisden Cricketer - a large panel of journalists, broadcasters, photographers and fans placed Newlands only behind Lord’s, the symbolic home of the game.

The famous London venue was described as the “alpha and omega of cricket venues ... the venue upon which every cricketer yearns to leave his mark”.

Grounds from all 10 Test-playing nations were considered, and no other South African venue featured in the top 10 of 26 highlighted.

Just behind Newlands in third spot was Australia’s similarly picturesque Adelaide Oval.

On Cricket South Africa’s website, WPCA chief executive Andre Odendaal was quoted as saying: “This is an important endorsement of a place that has special meaning for both Capetonians and South African cricket.”

Newlands traditionally gets the best Test gates in South Africa and routinely hosts the bumper New Year home Test match.

Top 10 Test playing venues:

1. Lords, London
2. Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa
3. Adelaide Oval, Australia
4. Galle International Stadium, Sri Lanka
5. Trent Bridge, Nottingham
6. Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia
7. Melbourne Cricket Ground
8. Antigua Recreation Ground, Antigua
9. Kensington Oval, Barbados
10. Basin Reserve, New Zealand

      Squeegee - 2012-05-10 16:18

Nothing like a Newlands Test early in the New Year!

      nicolaas.geldenhuys - 2012-05-10 18:15

yea cape town is by far the most beautiful, cleanest, best city, not even in s.a, but on the whole continent and we all know why...

      Andrew - 2012-05-10 19:50

Newsland Cricket Grounds....Another reason never to leave this wonderful!!!

  • Darryl - 2012-05-10 15:42

Got tickets to the first 4 days at Lords for the England South Africa series, should be a CRACKER

      Randomhero6661 - 2012-05-10 15:58

by ticket(s) you mean you can give one away?

      patrickjasoncawood - 2012-05-10 16:13

      got any spare??

      Roger - 2012-05-10 16:13

Did you take out a new bond on your house?

      Darryl - 2012-05-10 16:51

Sorry all 4 spare tickets are taken, took all of 2 mins to get a few different mates to come along!! Did I mention I have tickets to The Oval test and Wimbledon Center Court on the first Wednesday? Yes we have dodgy weather in London but the travelling and sporting opportunities damn well make up for it!! Been to Kingmead on boxing day many times but never been to Newlands but if definitely on my list of things to do one New Years. PROTEAS!!!

Great grounds but i always preferred the huge stadiums like mcg, scg, eden gardens. SA needs a stadium like that with no grass banks. Wanderers is tiny by mcg standards!

      Bob - 2012-05-10 16:08

Can't agree with you dhirshan, love the grass banks, that big rock, and the fantastic atmosphere, it really takes some beating, oh and the funniest vendors in the world.

      Darryl - 2012-05-10 16:53

Having been to the WACA, MCG and the SCG I would have to go with the WACA for the relaxed atmosphere and grassy banks. Keep SA grounds as they are!!

Andrew - 2012-05-10 19:53 can make huge stadiums anywhere....but the natural beauty of Newlands and Cape Town....priceless!!

  • johan.blertsie.cilliers - 2012-05-10 15:54

So we have one of the best cricket grounds, a good rugby stadium, but I have to ask,why do we have the most amateur management structure in place?

      bill.vanzyl - 2012-05-10 16:06

They are not amateurs, they are professional scoundrels and gravy train riders....

  • patrickjasoncawood - 2012-05-10 16:15

Lords is more special as a player and maybe your first time as a spectator But as a regular spectator Newlands def beats Lords hands down. You struggle to enjoy yourself at Lords Shirt off in the sun sipping a cold castle draught with your mates, nothing better Wont get that at Lords

  • jeremy002 - 2012-05-10 16:19

St Georges Park in Port Elizabeth is still my favourite, after the Wanderers, which has an electric atmosphere, and the most informed crowd.

      Andrew - 2012-05-10 19:56

@jeremy...are saying that the Newlands regulars are not informed!!! bahhhh!!!!!

      Bob - 2012-05-11 09:25

jeremy, what crowd at the wanderers? the place is always half empty, you don't see that at Newlands, packed to the rafters for just about every game, and yes they know their cricket.

  • david.christianson1 - 2012-05-10 16:49

They didn't ask me. Lords? I can think of half a dozen more pleasant grounds, for the ordinary spectator, in Middlesex alone. In SA, although a Cape Town resident, I'd have no hesitation in chosing the Bullring

  • mthunzi.phakathi - 2012-05-10 18:02

On my to do list new years test @newlands. Cricket should hv grass banks, a place to relax when the tension in the middle gets too much. Leave stadiums for quick fix games like soccer, rugby, T20 etc but leave test cricket in cricket GROUNDS.

  • Danuska - 2012-05-10 20:06

Great news....yes to the BEST OF NEWLANDS GROUNDS...such BEAUTY PLACE TO BE!!!!! Too proud :)

  • Terence - 2012-05-10 20:22

A South African (Dave Richardson) to Head the ICC, Newlands as the best ground after "The Home", all we have to do now is give England a good hiding in their own back yard to make a perfect scenario!

  • caleb.moyce - 2012-05-10 21:42

Newlands Cricket Ground should be a wander of the world or something to that effect, always excellent cricket and even though ticket prices are up, Cape Townians always come out in full support of the boys no matter what!

  • Hannetjie - 2012-05-11 12:25

@John - Cape Town is NOT a world wonder, Table Mountian is one of the 7 new nature wonders. I like the Wanderers ground and think that should be on the list!!!

  • jan.mare7 - 2012-05-11 12:53

What about the Wanderers, surely needs to be up there?

      Bob - 2012-05-11 15:17

jan, no way, the Paarl cricket ground is another stunner, the wanderers is just ordinary.
