Mpitsang set for selector role

Cape Town - Former Proteas and Knights fast bowler Victor Mpitsang is likely to be elected as an additional national selector.

Cricket South Africa's transformation policy stipulates that there should be an "ethnic black representative" amongst its selection panel.

According to the Volksblad website, Mpitsang is willing to undertake the role should he be elected.

Cricket SA CEO Jacques Faul said, without disclosing any names, a decision about a possible new selector will be discussed at a meeting next Wednesday.

Another former Proteas fast bowler, Makhaya Ntini, was reportedly also in line to be elected. However, his recent criticism about wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile's constant exclusion from the South African side could count against him. In November last year Ntini said Tsolekile "would be playing for the Proteas if he was white".

The 32-year-old Mpitsang, currently a commentator on the game, played two ODIs for the Proteas back in the late 1990s and 103 first class matches.

At 18 years and 342 days he became the youngest player to represent South Africa in one-day cricket when he played against the West Indies in February 1999.
