Mickey Arthur to coach Oz?

Cape Town - Former Proteas coach Mickey Arthur is regarded as the ideal candidate to be the next coach of Australia's cricket side.

Australia's current coach, Tim Nielsen, has come under fire for poor recent performances from the country that dominated world cricket for longer than a decade from the late 1990's through the 2000's

Nielsen's popularity took a serious dent after their Ashes loss to England last summer.

And according to the Volksblad newspaper, there are now rumblings that Australia should - like India and England - consider appointing a coach from Africa.

India won the recent World Cup with South Africa's Gary Kirsten at the helm and England have become the No 1 Test side with Zimbabwean Andy Flower as coach.

Arthur could thus be a suitable candidate for Australia's next coach. They have never had a foreign coach before.

The 43-year old Arthur said that exciting times does indeed lie ahead.

"I would be a fool not to look at an option like that," said Arthur.

But he is nevertheless committed to his current position.

"My current focus is on my job as Western Australia's coach, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I have made a lot of changes here that I would like to carry through.

Arthur was South Africa's most successful coach to date. Under his guidance the Protea's won a Test series in England for the first time in 40 years and also defeated Australia in Australia for the first time ever.
