Majola blames McIntosh

2011-12-06 12:05

Cricket SA (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola says his contentious bonus after the IPL series in 2009 was determined by CSA operations officer Don McIntosh.

"Mr McIntosh [determined my bonus], and his own bonus as well," Majola told a ministerial inquiry into CSA's affairs in Pretoria.

"Mr McIntosh did a full schedule, including his [bonus] which I accepted as well. I never discussed mine as it’s very difficult to discuss your own bonus."

Majola took the stand for the first time in the inquiry into bonuses paid to staff after the CSA hosted the Indian Premier League.
He said the contract signed for the event was exactly the same as the one used for hosting other ICC events.

Don McIntosh, CSA’s operations officer, was the tournament director for the IPL, Majola said.

He fulfilled the same role in the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa and, given the short notice for the IPL, they agreed to apply the same terms and conditions.

Majola said they used the same principle for determining bonuses as the one applied in previous tournaments.

"The tournament director is more senior when it comes to that [bonuses] and depending on work done he uses a 'multiples' guide," said Majola.

"He got more than me on other tournaments but on this one [IPL], I did more work than him."

Committee chairman Judge Chris Nicholson pushed Majola him on why he had written a letter to McIntosh on July 16, 2009 telling him, "we have managed to negotiate with the IPL to pay you a special discretionary bonus for your contribution" to the IPL.

Majola said he had no recollection of the letter but each member of staff would have received the same letter if they received a bonus.

Die steler is net so skuldig soos die deler

  • Phumezo - 2011-12-06 12:28

If you were a real champion of transformation Majola this would have never happened to you. But you chose to sarround yourself with those with those who are reactionary forces and stumbling block in transforming cricket SA! We would welcome the reinstatement of Dr. Nyoka and Leanard Chuene to head up Cricket SA.

      Bokfan - 2011-12-06 12:33

What I find peculiar about you transformation vuvuzelas is you'll keep honking the same noise even though everyone else knows you for a pest. As far as you are concerned criminality is ok as long as its black. Fortunately there are fewer and fewer of you around to poison the atmosphere.

      Deon - 2011-12-06 12:41

Chuene? never again. Did you miss the whole ASA saga?

      rheinhardt.peens - 2011-12-06 12:54

      U are a idiot...Phu

      Isikhulu - 2011-12-06 13:01

So Phumezo, comrade; if your crew is corrupt and you condone it, who is the weakest link? If he accepted the bonus without first checking the process that he is driving (CEO's responsibility) is he not incompetent? How can you be a CEO and break corporate governance rules? Majola is corrupt, period. Why has he not taken ownership or shown accountability (not responsibility) through this whole proces? BECAUSE MAJOLA IS WEAK. Majola should have been transparent in handling this process; alternativly he should have been pro active in the process building up to this enquiry. He has ducked and dived and is now blaming others? How long must this drag on and at what cost? This "bonus" saga is embarassing. Tell me who deserves bonuses of millions when the development of the game is under funded? Eish, I can't believe.

      roberta.keeling - 2011-12-06 13:19

Not Chuene please! He is one of the biggest crooks in sports administration, and I use the word administration carefully, s he was no administrator's backside. A thieving, lying little dictator he was. Dr. Nyoka at kleast had some guts, but his efforts to clean up cricket were rewrded by the fat cats an crooks joining together and voting him out. CSA is sick, and needs a complete overhaul!

  • Trevor - 2011-12-06 12:50

Just like the cowboys the one with the quickest draw wins. Now that they are all shooting from the hip who is going to fall first. Majola the boss already prefers to blame others for his errors. This is the real world take your fall be the man. Others will follow for their own errors.

  • Kenneth - 2011-12-06 12:53

I'm pretty sure Steve Elworthy was actually the tournament director for the 2007 T20 World Cup ...

  • sorryson3 - 2011-12-06 13:09

Audacity !!! To be photographed at your Alma Mater in the underprivilaged Uitenhage area handing over cricket gear as a gesture of good will, pales into insignificance and was nothing more than a hollow gesture smacking of window dressing and cheap brownie point scoring !!! You should hang your head in shame " common thief ", next time you pass by there I hope the pupils and staff acknowledge you for what you really represent ........... CORRUPTION AND GREED !!!!!!

  • brionyl.french - 2011-12-06 13:15

Lets all point fingers why dont we??? I say point we will take you down too... Clearly there is a big issue here and so all must be guilty, no one questioned anything, they took their money and spent it or whatever.... I think fire them all and start a fresh.... Surley there are someones out there can do all these peoples jobs??? There is no space for this in our sport, in our country, in anything we do.... Im starting to think that we were the country that had all the prisoners dumped on and not Australia....
