Potchefstroom - The Chevrolet Warriors trounced the struggling Highveld Lions by 152 runs in their 1-Day Cup clash at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Friday night.
Simon Harmer helped himself to figures of 4/42 in eight overs, while man of the match Wayne Parnell and Johan Botha scooped two wickets each as the Lions were bundled out for 155.
Earlier, Parnell’s maiden ton at this level had lifted the Warriors to an imposing 307 for 9 in their innings, after they had been asked to bat by the Lions.
Parnell, who scored 104 from 107 balls before being run out, received fine support from the in-form Colin Ingram, who chalked up a fine 73 off 74 balls in a stand of 149 for the second wicket.
Parnell had been pushed up the order in place of Jon-Jon Smuts, and the Proteas ODI bowler took his chance with both hands. He added 60 with Arno Jacobs for the first wicket, and continued to bat with an assurance even after the fielding restrictions had been lifted.
The Warriors lost their way somewhat when Parnell fell, as Aaron Phangiso showed good resilience to register figures of 3/42 amidst the carnage. Zander de Bruyn chipped in with three wickets of his own, but the Warriors were especially harsh on Jean Symes and Richard Cameron, who conceded 88 runs in 11 overs between them.
Johan Botha’s 36 and a handy 26 by Simon Harmer saw the men from Port Elizabeth go beyond 300.
The Lions, however, fell desperately short of their target, as regular wickets hampered any progress they tried to make.
Parnell’s golden day saw him remove the key duo of Jonathan Vandiar (36 off 47 balls) and Neil McKenzie for six. With no real partnerships to speak of, the Lions were never in the reckoning.
Harmer’s accurate bowling proved too much for the desperate home batsmen, and he helped himself to 4/42 as the Lions were whittled out inside 40 overs.
The loss leaves them winless after six matches, with their only points coming from a no-result against the Sunfoil Dolphins.
For the Warriors, the bonus point win keeps them well and truly interested in the race for the top spot with the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras.
