Cape Town - Richard Levi sparked another successful run chase at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday evening to enable the Cape Cobras to move clear of the field at the top of the 1 Day Cup log.
Levi made 83 off 59 balls as the Cobras made light work of a target of 275 set by their nearest challengers, the Knights. The Cobras won by 5 wickets with 2 overs to spare.
The Warriors made the second highest total this season (356/5) to beat the Dolphins by 90 runs in the evening’s other match at Buffalo Park in East London.
While the Cobras are firmly established in first place at the halfway stage the battle is hotting up for the qualifying positions for the semi-final with the Knights, the Warriors and the Dolphins all very much in contention.
The results apart, the two matches will be well remembered by a succession of outstanding innings by some of South Africa’s brightest young talents. There is no doubt that the return to a 50 overs format is benefitting the development of batting generally with the players being able to build innings rather than throw away their wickets with reckless shots.
Both Reeza Hendricks of the Knights and Daryn Smit of the Dolphins made maiden list A centuries while Jon-Jon Smuts of the Warriors made a career best 132 and became the first player to achieve an aggregate of 300 runs in this season’s 1 Day Cup. Colin Ingram of the Warriors also returned to his best form with an innings of 90 off only 73 balls (6 fours and 4 sixes).
Dean Elgar of the Knights (94) and Justin Ontong of the Cobras (86) were also among the runs.
With the exception of Smit and Ontong all these players are 26 or younger.
