Kleinveldt: I took dope

2012-03-17 06:52

Johannesburg - Former South Africa Twenty20 seamer Rory Kleinveldt admitted on Friday that he took the banned drug cannabis last month.

The Western Cape Cobras star has been provisionally suspended and will plead guilty to doping charges, the South African Cricketers' Association said.

"I admit to having acted irresponsibly," Kleinveldt said in a statement. "I have made a big mistake and should have known what I was doing was wrong.

"As a person and a professional cricketer, I need to take responsibility for this and deal with the consequences of my actions."

Cannabis is a 'specified substance' on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited substances list.

This means that although a banned substance, it is widely accepted that cannabis is not usually taken for performance-enhancing reasons.

Kleinveldt, who turned 29 this week, represented South Africa at the World Twenty20 in the West Indies two years ago.

The statement should be simply "I AM a dope".

      Paul - 2012-03-17 09:35

He made a mistake. Give him a break.

      Dave Prinsloo - 2012-03-17 10:04

you said it brian - you are indeed a dope.

      Kyle Ramsuey Lottering - 2012-03-17 10:13

jou ma se dope.. Really this makes no sense.. Why is the cricket board so anti weed? Even JZ has a toke or 3 a year

      bluzulu - 2012-03-17 10:50

Come on over here Rory, Cannabis is decriminalized here in NZ. You'll be safe to have a joint here mate.

  • Piet - 2012-03-17 08:05

Yes you can say he is a dope but then all the players that celebrated after the game are drunks.... oh but thats not on the list so it’s morally “correct”.

  • gavin.simpson.0 - 2012-03-17 08:59

Ridiculous. When I first saw the story I thought he was really taking drugs.... but a bit of weed? Still, as a pro sportsman he should have known he would be tested eventually. Yet it makes no sense as to why it's a banned substance.... well said Piet.

  • Kent Pluke - 2012-03-17 09:14

Poor Rory... I still dont fully get the point of them testing for substances which don't in any way enhance performance. If anything it's gonna do the opposite.

  • Roy - 2012-03-17 09:42

I don't feel sorry for him at all. To many "professional" sportsman think they can do as they please and get away with it. What a bad influence this will have a youngsters.

      gavin.simpson.0 - 2012-03-17 10:08

On the contrary Roy, he openly admitted his mistake. Show me one Politician in the country who has done the same, or one busted drunken driver doing the same, or one sportsman busted taking performance enhancing drugs doings the same.... No, methinks he has done well all things considered, and wish him a speedy return to his profession. So why don't all professional people have to do drug tests, like lawyers, judges, policeman,etc...? Surely big brother needs to keep a closer eye on all of us?

This really makes me mad, stop being so sentimental when it comes to doping, this is the very thing that is causing our society to degenerate further, families are destroyed through this type of thing, these guys earn good money and then blow it all away on drink, drugs and women, It is time that the proffessional sports people realize they are not above the law and actually they are seen as role models, the problem is this, will they inspire or lead people down a road of destruction.

      Buzz - 2012-03-19 09:47

When are idealists going to stop blaming substances and objects for the failings or perceived failings in society? Who are you to tell anyone how to live their life?

  • Kenny - 2012-03-17 12:52

Another kids hero gone down the toilet. To much money for to little work Dopey Kleinvelt

  • Buzz - 2012-03-19 09:56

So what that this guy smoked some grass? Ironic that he is being suspended for using something that is categorically significantly safer than one of the substances our national team is sponsored by, alcohol.

Here's the point; He gets busted for a drug which grows naturally on this planet while they advertise a drug (which is taxed, so it's 'ok') on his t-shirt. Come on, lets all be hypocritical bastards. So go to rest with your 'image for the children' line and let people enjoy that which does little or no harm to ourselves and especially not to you. Stay indoors, drink beer and moan about everything, while we get high on good stuff and play outside. As you were, being boring
