Kirsten's the man: Vaughan

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer

Cape Town – Gary Kirsten is the coach South Africa should target as replacement for Mickey Arthur, says former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Speaking on Cricinfo.tv on Wednesday, Vaughan said the former Proteas opening batsman would be “perfect” for the role.

“He’s a legend of the South African game and done a wonderful job with India. I just don’t think they would want to get rid of him.”

Speculating on other possible candidates, Vaughan said Duncan Fletcher, his key ally in seizing back the Ashes from Australia in 2005, could probably be ruled out.

“I think at Fletch’s age (61) he’s enjoying his consultancy with Hampshire and the bits and bobs he does with South Africa.”

Vaughan praised Arthur for a “good job” and said he would end up in county cricket or with another international team.

“I’ve liked the things he’s done, and he’s a good man. All things come to an end.

“Graeme Smith is definitely the front man, the leader of that team. He leads from the front so well.

“(Arthur) was the one who sat in the background and tried to calm things down.

“Smith has a good think-tank around him behind the stumps in Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers – they’re a good quartet.”

Vaughan said he believed the Proteas were not “as close and tight”, in sharing the recent home Test series 1-1 with England, as they had been in beating his own England side in 2008.

“They looked the real deal then. There were definitely little chinks in the armour that England could get at (this summer).”
