KP in trouble for Proteas SMS

2012-08-11 12:13

London - England’s selectors have delayed their decision to include Kevin Pietersen in next week’s final Test at Lord’s until they discover the content of SMS messages he made to South Africa’s players during the second Test at Headingley.

According to The Telegraph website, Pietersen is alleged to have SMSed Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers during the match with less than complimentary things about Andy Flower’s management style and Andrew Strauss’s leadership.

The selection panel, which includes Flower, met at Edgbaston on Friday to pick the squad for the Test and the World Twenty20 tournament, but appear to have taken a dim view and want to know the nature of the messages before deciding on the final 13 which is due to be announced at 09:30 on Sunday.

Before Pietersen’s thumbs did their loose talk, his bizarre comments at last Monday’s press conference would have been enough to place him in jeopardy of playing in England’s biggest Test match since Sydney, where they won the Ashes in Australia for the first time in 24 years.

“The politics is what I have to deal with personally,” he said earlier in the week. “It’s tough being me playing for England.”

With a win against South Africa needed to draw the series and maintain their No 1 Test status, the pragmatism of picking him and playing their strongest XI would probably have held sway with selectors over the principle of dropping him to maintaining team unity.

But the SMSing saga may prove the tipping point that sees Pietersen considered too toxic for team spirit and allow the latter view to hold sway.

The third and final Test starts at Lord's on Thursday, August 16.

Let's just be happy he plays for England......

      booswig.visagie - 2012-08-11 13:33

If the Dolphins had picked him while he was still playing in SA, instead of tossing him because of his skin colour, things might have turned out differently. He might have ended up playing for the protea's and we'd be better off for it.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-11 13:42

Booswig... He would have played as a bowler and not a batsman... He approached Eng and said he wanted to play for Eng as a Batsman... Hence he is a part-time spinner for them. When he was in SA he was a Full-time Bowler hence not being picked...

      james.whyte.104 - 2012-08-11 14:18

@booswig. KP playing for SA. That will be a cold day in hell. Rather have england deal with his childish, petty and petulant ways. Total asswip that throws his toys out the cot when he cannot get his own way. Look at all the clubs he has left. Every one on bad terms. I was one who cheered when he left and Amla got into the SA side. Who would you rather have, Amla or KP?

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-08-11 15:18

All is forgiven KP, come back and play for SA!

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-11 15:27

@ Chaplinn. I see we have another contributor repeating the brandy and coke talk about KP rather than the true facts. It is a fact that he was not awarded a contract with KZN due to instructions from the CSA to award the contract to an AA. Furthermore he did not “approach” England as you state, he had to qualify for citizenship and prove his capabilities in county cricket before he was selected for England. You do not have to like the guy but at least get your facts right and leave the pub rumours in the pub next time.

      franklyn.davies.1 - 2012-08-11 16:01

didnt clive rice help him get a contract in England ?

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-08-11 16:55

Inki... Go ask Nassar Hussain ... He even stated on a interview which they did with him... So don't come talk talk BS to me pls... KP went to Nass during a test series they played in SA and they where playing against some club/XI or something like that... After the game KP came storming into the Dressing room and sat next to Nass and said i want to come and play for Eng as a Batter. Nass dismissed him as they where against the ropes in the test series.. Upon returning home he had talks with people... KP went over to Eng to play county cricket where he qualified for Eng... He has an English passport even before coming to Eng if i'm not mistaken... - 2012-08-11 16:58

For those going on about quotas. It is KPs opinion that he was not selected because of his skin colour. It is possibly but not definitely true The truth is a) He was playing for Natal as an off spinner batting No 8 b) He was not playing well and based on form struggled to justify his spot c) He moved to the UK and was NOT an instant success there. He struggled at 1st and there are many more sides. d) He has fallen out with all his counties e) KP, lets face it blames everyone else However SA, in hindsight cannot escape criticism because Natal clearly did not spot his talent. Trust me if they believed he had 50% of the talent he does have they would have picked him. Hindsight proves nothing. We missed his talent. We lost him. Period.

      bernard.ingram - 2012-08-11 16:58

inky.pinkeye...what a loser....KP just had to chance provinces. Instead he changed countries. Why support a traitor?

      paul.muirhead.92 - 2012-08-11 17:48

Just to clarify the issue with KP and why he left - he wanted a contract from the Dolphins and was not offered one based on affirmative action - Goolam Bodi got the contract - KP and his father then had a meeting with Ali Bacher and he was offered a contract at an alternative franchise which he chose to turn down - so he was given the opportunity just not the way he wanted it - ten or so years later, it appears nothing had changed

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-11 19:59

@ Chaplinn. Thanks for your reply and for contradicting yourself. Nassar is not England or the ECB ! He was just another player!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-08-12 09:58

Booswig. who do you suggest he should have replaced in the SA squad then? This should be interesting!

      lindy.leroux - 2012-08-13 09:40

Inky Pinky, Nassar was the captain of the England team, and what Charlie says is correct, except for the part that Nassar got him into a county, clive rice got him into a county there, and KP was not good enough to play for even the dolphens at that time, He was a Spinner smashing the ball around at the bottom of the order, and he's batting was like Roelof van der merwe's, useless! he chose that path and now he's gotta deal with the facts that everything can't always go your way! " J "

  • tumisang.kolobe - 2012-08-11 12:25

I like Kp. What a dude. He shows balls on and off the field and doesnt mind what people say. Not like some slapgatte that will always follow the establishment. Go Kp. Say it like it is buddy. People with no self esteem like it when someone with balls gets into trouble. Kp is proudly south african. Those south africans with attitude. Skitterend.

      Stormkaap - 2012-08-11 12:40

Nothing short of stupid and hardly proudly S African,,

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-08-11 13:47

That's just silly. It is not about whether you have the balls to take on the establishment. It is about the fact that all professional players are contractually obligated not to mention certain issues to the press or by social media. In any walk of life, you break the terms of the contract with your employer, you pay the price. You have the option not to sign the contract if you disagree with its terms. So KP simply has no manners.

      james.whyte.104 - 2012-08-11 14:51

And Marco shows his stoooopid side. KP left SA cause he could not stand it here. Moron

      john.bucknall.1 - 2012-08-11 13:08

I read this comment somewhere and had to laugh, "where do the English cricketers stay when they tour SA.......with mom and dad of course"

  • veldt66 - 2012-08-11 13:06

I remember some bad stuff he said about South Africa when he decided to play for England.....

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-11 15:35

@ Velt66. Please share these remarks you claim he made about SA with us please? I have tried unsuccessfully for many years to find out what these comments were without luck and decided many, many years ago that it was once again just unsubstantiated rubbish. He was (rightly) very critical of the CSA’s racial policy which is not criticism of SA and CSA never challenged his comments published in his book because he was obviously telling the truth. - 2012-08-11 17:18

No Inky.Pinky, just because no-one denied that Pietersen was dropped because of quotas does not make it true. You don't comment on allegations because then you have to comment all the time. KP was not playing well when he got dropped by Natal. It is true that Natal were using him badly (batting No 8 as an off spinner) But his talent wasn't apparent back then. Its sad we missed his talent but just because we did miss him does make it it true that he got dropped because of quotas. Its not as if he arrived in England and his talent became apparent. It took time.

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-11 20:04

@ David Baker. KP publishes a book that is read worldwide in which he makes states that he was discriminated against because of his skin colour and CSA do not challenge it or sue him or at the very least demand he withdraw his allegations. I think not! During this period KP goes on to become one of the most successful cricket players in the world and a very successful business man while CSA is discredited. I definitely believe KP!

      veldt66 - 2012-08-11 20:16

Inky.Pinky , i wont waste my time explaining what this guy said about his country, but for sure he is going the same down hill slope as Clyde Rathborne.

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-11 21:01

@ Velt66. Your reply does not surprise me as you are unable to put your money where your mouth is. Similarly you would be unable to back your comment that KP is on a downhill slope. He is one of the best cricket players in world, has an offer of $2.5m for six weeks of PSL and is a very successful business man. Sorry to disappoint you but this guy is a winner !

      veldt66 - 2012-08-12 01:27

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-08-12 09:15

@inky.pinky, you a KP fan by any chance? KP is a chop, a self absorbed chop who acts without thinking, when he is ditched from the England squad , who is he going to blame, AB? Dale? for breaking the trust , the trust he so evidently has broken, that of his own team, his own country and his own self respect, his ego goes far beyond his ability, a good cricketer he may be but a great he is not and never will be ! he will be booted, his tweeting and grandstanding comments show him for what he is, a chop !

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-12 10:35

@ Velt66. You mention the word traitor! This column is about KP and not the traitor Hansie. KP never betrayed his country. His country betrayed him!

      inky.pinky.56 - 2012-08-12 10:49

@ Kelvyn. I am foremost a cricket fan and enjoy watching talented players plying their trade. I am a fan of KP the cricketer because I have been privileged to watch him at many venues throughout the world. When he comes in to bat the pubs empty and a buzz goes around the ground that no other player can generate. On his move from SA it has become patently clear to me that he is the victim of ignorance and that is why I challenge people that perpetuate the rubbish about him year after year. A few years ago I challenged the editor of one of SA’s best selling sport mags and to my astonishment he replied that there was no evidence of the rubbish his mag wrote but it was what the SA public wanted. I believe he apologised to KP a few years later for his lack of integrity. Concerning his personality I could not care less. I pay to watch KP the cricketer and not to witness his peacock personality.

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-08-12 17:46

@inky looks like I was right, KP Fired is the headline, not dropped, FIRED, all he had to do was play cricket but he wanted to be a rockstar, now he is neither !

InkyPinky your man or partner KP is gone, fired!!!!!

      lindy.leroux - 2012-08-13 10:01

Inky pinky, you want evidence, so where's your evidence of him being left out as result of affirmitive action??? just because he wrote it in his book, doesn't make it true! " J "

      ryanbrew - 2012-08-13 11:04

@inky - IT is once again his opinion about the racial discrimination... if it is true, then please explain to me how AB, Smith, Steyn, Rudolph, etc came through the same system that "discriminated" against him. (AB looked an awesome batsman from day 1 - KP not). All you need to do is put his comments into context... and if you look, wherever he has gone there has been controversy... he left KZN and SA under controversy, left his first 2 county teams in Eng under controversy, quite as Eng captain under controversy, controversially quite the ODI team, then makes comments about the end of his test career, sends SMS' to our boys about his captain and coach.... how much more evidence do you want... he is controversial, he always blames everyone else for his problems and never takes responsibility. Through every controversy he has been involved, one thing remains constant.... KP! So maybe, just maybe the "Raw deals" he has suffered at the hands of CSA and now ENG are of his own making!

  • grant.butler.104 - 2012-08-11 13:06

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-08-11 14:21

If what KP did then he should be sacked immediately. Why bother with an investigation because by now these SMS messages would have been deleted. I think if KP was playing for Saffa he wouldn't behave this badly. He is only doing it because he knows he is their star batsmen and there is no English player better than him. We have our all star top 5 Smith, Amla, Kallis, Peterson, AB. If he started behaving badly he was going to be chucked away asap. We have other oustanding players waiting on the wing like Levi, Du Plessis and the others.

England would be a more powerful place were it to let go its royal personal beliefs. There's nothing wrong in expressing disagreement with management and leadership styles. It may not be wise, but there's nothing wrong with it. What may be wrong is the divulging of the messages by the South African players. Why did they do this if not to manipulate public opinion against Pietersen and influence his selection.

  • jeremy.forbes.1293 - 2012-08-11 19:05

KP is an Afrikaner first and foremost. He grew up with the understanding that if you turn your back on the English they will stabb you in it. Hence, when he lost the captaincy, he felt fundamentally that he was stabbed in the back. Ever since his sense of hurt has looked for a moment of revenge, it may well be now i.e. walking away from the English establishment when they are trying to hold on to no 1 place and retain the 20/20 World Cup. No doubt the South Africans have been in his ear about loyalty and the inherent distrustful nature of the English. Not surprisingly his SMS' are to the two most Afrikaans players in the team. KP come home, what fantastic drama that will be, watch out for it though. South African cricket should make him an offer he can't refuse and he doesn't even need qualifying time.

  • NigelJamesTurner - 2012-08-12 17:52

From an English perspective (if you're interested) KP's a twat, but a talented one. His mum's English which is why he got a Brit passport. He did say some nasty things about CSA, but I can't remember what they were. What embarrassed me when he made his debut was his over the top English "patriotism", getting the three lions tattoo etc. But it eems to me that he's a bat for hire, unlike, say Trott (English father), who appears to have committed his future to the country, not just the cricket team. I'm not convinced that KP will ever be "English" and could well imagine him living back in SA or somewhere else sunny when his time's up. England will have lost a talent for sure if they can't resolve this issue and the team that plays at Lords next week will be the weaker for it. I'm pretty sure that SA will take the series. But dropping KP may have been the only option given this SMS business. The demeanour of the England test players has not been right for a while and I wonder how much that has to do with KP's antics. If he's a divisive force in the dressing room, then its better that he goes. Funnily enough the ODI team has improved without him - coincidence? Time will tell, but I reckon his test and ODI careers are over unless he's prepared to eat even more humble pie. Not sure he will given the earnings potential of the IPL.

      lindy.leroux - 2012-08-13 10:25

Nice comment! the only problem for Kp (and i think he saw it, hence the change of mind to be available for all forms of the gam for England now) how long will he still be playing IPL if his not playing International cricket, the IPL teams like International Stars, not hasbeens! " J "
