Jobless Jennings 'shattered'

2014-04-24 09:03

Cape Town - Ray Jennings is absolutely shattered after his contract as national Under-19 cricket coach was not renewed.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday informed Jennings that his application for the post was not successful. With his contract set to expire at the end of this month, Jennings re-applied for the role.

'Jet' was overlooked despite leading the South African Under-19 side to their first ever World Cup title earlier this year.

CSA instead appointed Shukri Conrad as national academy head coach and Lawrence Mahatlane as national Under-19 team head coach.

"I would like to congratulate both individuals on their respective appointments and wish them well as we re-organise ourselves for greater success in future," CSA chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, said via a statement released to the media on Wednesday.

"I would also like to thank Ray Jennings for his fantastic service as our Under-19 head coach over the past nine years.

"Change is inevitable and these new appointments follow the restructuring put forward through the Cricket Pipeline Committee and approved by the board in February."

Jennings, in an interview with the Beeld website, said he was "shattered" when he heard the news.

He said he'll be jobless in less than a week and wonders how he will be able to provide for his family and pay his bills.

He said his whole life "changed drastically" with one phone call and it was "tough to process".

Despite winning the World Cup, there was still a lot Jennings wanted to achieve with the SA Under-19 side.

Corrie van Zyl, CSA's general manager of cricket, said the possibility exists for them to use Jennings as a consultant in future.

Van Zyl said change was inevitable and that it would be unfair to say that Jennings was axed for political reasons.

What was it then, his hairstyle??? Man up, just for a change!

      Omgeklits DeMaaifudí - 2014-04-24 09:50

Yes - c'mon then - tell us why he was axed.

      Utopian Idealist - 2014-04-24 10:04

Ray take your family and immigrate to a country that appreciates and awards success and when CSA beg you to come back and consult, email them a high definition picture of your ar**hole.

      Erich Goosen - 2014-04-24 10:18

What the hell is it with CSA? This man is a hundred times better than the current Protea coach.

      NickvanGraan - 2014-04-24 10:29

"unfair to say that Jennings was axed for political reasons." unfair, but true hey Corrie van Zyl? You also have to be careful where you tread incase you too lose your job to politics, or is it racism?.

      Christo Meyer - 2014-04-24 11:47

Ray, leave that godforsaken country and emigrate to a country that will appreciate your skills. SA is a cesspit of incompetent nepotism, racism, and cronyism,

      Revelgen - 2014-04-24 12:20

Racism rears its ugly head yet again. When will CSA and other sporting bodies wake up to the fact that when a person is appointed on colour, not merit, that person will always labour under an inferiority complex of 'not being good enough for the job.' I am all in favour of persons of colour who achieve high positions or get into top teams due to merit - in fact I love it - but hate this reverse-apartheid being applied under the current racist govt. You are dooming your own appointees to a negative self-image.

      Gunner ZN - 2014-04-24 12:40

      Sri Lanka needs a coach

      Ray Priestley - 2014-04-24 14:38

You should all know that you need to be incompetent to succeed in SA.

      Rob Martin - 2014-04-24 15:15

CSA are so far up Mbulala's backside only their toenails are sticking out.

      Bobbe Aap - 2014-04-24 16:05

Ray brought this on himself. Successful whites always get shown the door.

      Peet Booysen - 2014-04-24 19:33

Only one thing. The idiots had a finger in the pie.

      Lowna Schutte Appelgryn - 2014-04-24 21:03

      Wrong skin colour!!!

      Clinton Tupper - 2014-04-24 21:20

This is racism at its best!!!!!

      Fabio Josi - 2014-04-25 08:45

Same happened to Jake White after winning the RWC, go figure!

      Freddie Miller - 2014-04-25 09:10

Jennings made the mistake of having an opinion, that is a dangerous thing to express when you are white. I see a trend in SA sport, use a white coach to get a team up to standard and win a trophy, then replace him with an affirmative who can take over at the top and oversee the slow decline. Snor comes to mind.

      Hi-Fi - 2014-04-25 09:53

Who are you fooling? It was a political move and is a racist one at that! Stop thinking everyone is an idiot!. Lorgat has been a problem child from day one. His appointment was also political

      Shane Bond - 2014-04-25 11:46

Very very sad, Ray jy verdien beter.

I am absolutely pissed off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is getting so ridiculous. Pack you bags Jet, and jet over to a country that will appreciate your great experience! No respect for CSA! Wish Haroon "hang-gat" would run into a wall face first!

  • Frankie Harmse - 2014-04-24 09:17

Live by regstellende aksie.... been like this for so long..

  • Derrick Pentz - 2014-04-24 09:18

This would be funny if it was not so tragic. Ray Jennings- more cricket talent, knowledge & experience in his little pinkie than the rest of these clowns put together.

      Michael Clifford Georgopoulos - 2014-04-24 23:59

Derrick don't compliment them by calling them clowns........clowns have got brains......They are black racist dumb idiots!!! Let them f....8ck up the sport like they doing to the country.

  • Peet Booysen - 2014-04-24 09:21

Laat ek raai. Die "idiote" is seker weer hierby betrokke. Mooi so!

    It was political....so sad

  • Theard Stimie - 2014-04-24 09:25

How is it that every time a South African coach wins a World Cup they fire him??!!! Same thing happened to Jake White after we won the 2007 Rugby World Cup. If I was a national coach of any type of sport I will lead my team to the semi finals and then make sure they loose somehow because I have to look at my own job security! What a joke

      Lerato H Nyelele Mjoli - 2014-04-24 12:04

why do you thnk the proteas always loses like that they cant stand losing jobs!!!

      Lerato H Nyelele Mjoli - 2014-04-24 12:04

why do you thnk the proteas always loses like that they cant stand losing jobs!!!

      Tony van Niekerk - 2014-04-24 22:09

If you know anything about sport, Lerato, you will know that the Proteas are the number one team in the world and many of our cricketers are the number one players in various categories. If you bring politics into sport, the result is always negative. Bafana Bafana is a great example.

  • Piet Poggenpoel - 2014-04-24 09:26

Sorry Ray, too white and too competent...

  • Daniel Wessels - 2014-04-24 09:29

Come now people, change is inevitable, of course they had to axe him, he is white. Whites are incapable of doing anything good. The only thing that he can claim is winning the under 19 world cup........... oh my gosh he achieved something no other coach coaching ANY South African side has achieved. How did we miss that???? unless they are going to make him national coach of the Proteas?

  • Nazeera Valli - 2014-04-24 09:29

Problem with all sports in South Africa is that based on race , the higher powers change what is not broken ... And fail to replace what really is ...

      Kings Nkosi Sphamandla - 2014-04-24 23:23

The problem with Cricket and Rugby in South Africa is that it is missed represented. 20 years into our democracy these sporting codes are not true representation of South African demographics. "Black people don't play cricket and rugby...". Bollocks! Black people do play, but your Heyneke Meyer's would rather pick an injured white player than a in-form black player. This is not just in sports, this phenomenon is quite prevalent in the private sector as well. "Black people are just not good enough..." really now? Transformation was never going to be easy, but is of utmost important if this country will be a rainbow nation we all dream off.

      Ethan Hawk - 2014-04-25 06:55

@Sphamandla - Where is the quotas in soccer, no white players, and what have they achieved ??????? Bafana are utterly useless and the same is going to happen to Cricket and Rugby

      Joao Nunes - 2014-04-25 08:08

Sphamandla.........in a rainbow, there is no black and no white.....have a look next time......clown

      Pierre Coetzee - 2014-04-25 11:00

Kings: Up yours, the best players should be selected, black or white. What about the soccer teams??? How is this a 'true representation of South African demographics" like you put it. Always quick to blame the white person!! Clean in front of your own door first before starting to play the blaming game! Nice to always pull the race card hey my china??

  • Godfrey Mungomezi - 2014-04-24 09:36

A World Cup winning coach just being dumped like that? What other qualification were u looking for CSA really?

      John Stoltz - 2014-04-24 13:15

Godfrey, please do not try to apply intelligent logic to this scenario, since the ANC has a policy to deploy racist incompetent, corrupt cadres to all executive positions!! If Jet has failed, then it is to be expected that a head must roll!! But that rational brian power evades the ANC!!

      Michael Clifford Georgopoulos - 2014-04-25 00:02

      Godfrey?? A BLACK SKIN!!!!

  • Drake Richardson - 2014-04-24 09:40

Jet. To hell with those racist a-holes. Continue coaching in the IPL. Better pay and the respect you deserve. This quota crap from CSA is why I have turned my back on SA cricket and now support the opposition. Why should I As a white support an organization so blatantly against whites? I look forward to seeing the continued decline of this racist sport.

      Mpho Mabote - 2014-04-24 11:53

The irony Drake is that you've just summed up the views of many black rugby&cricket loving supporters.

      Richard Barnes - 2014-04-24 12:12

Unfortunately, Jennings lost his IPL job as well. He was coach for RCB and they have replaced him with Dan Vettori. Still, I think he should be able to find a coaching job somewhere quite easily with his record.

      Ethan Hawk - 2014-04-25 06:58

@Mpho you are a hypocrite, what about your Bafana soccer side, where is quotas in the soccer team ????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Glen Dick - 2014-04-24 09:43

Corrie van Zyl you are a f...king liar!!! Mr Logat, no wonder India hate you so much you double crossing prick! Lesson for all successful white coaches in SA , don't win big tournaments! Mr Jennings, I wish you all the best, I am sure some county or franchise abroad will need your knowledge and experience that is wasted here sadly. I watched you playing for the mean machine starring as Jet. You were my hero sir.

  • John Dalton - 2014-04-24 09:46

Only in South Africa! Jake White won the World Cup, and was fired! Ray Jennings won the u/19 World Cup, and is fired! We are really making it an effort to under achieve! We don't want our soccer team to look so bad! This is disgraceful! We are the only country that fire world cup winning coaches! Politics does not belong in sport! And then they think that their explanations for the actions are justified! Zimbabwe, here we come!

      Brolloks En Bittergal - 2014-04-24 15:28

Same happened years ago with Clive Barker after winning CAF.

  • Jon Low - 2014-04-24 09:48

"Change is inevitable and these new appointments follow the restructuring..." Step aside, white man. Make way for "transformation".

      Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat - 2014-04-24 12:47

But only after you bring the team to the top....

  • Valerie Vale - 2014-04-24 09:49

Sad but true .... you are white! Be proud!

  • Jon Low - 2014-04-24 09:53

"Van Zyl said change was inevitable and that it would be unfair to say that Jennings was axed for political reasons." So, what WAS he axed for? And what is it that makes change so "inevitable"? Please explain Corrie. And also let us know why it isn't equally "inevitable" for you to be getting the sack very soon too?

      Marius Santana - 2014-04-24 11:17

Yep Corrie, you're next ... it's inevitable that you will have to setup a consulting job real quick!

      Mpho Mabote - 2014-04-24 11:46

After nine years &five world cup failures under the same coach, change is inevitable JonLow.

      Ethan Hawk - 2014-04-25 07:34

@Mpho , that U19 team only lost 4 games in 9 years, how many games have bafana lost in that time ???? Hypocrite !

  • Andro Britz - 2014-04-24 09:54

Flippen Fools by CSA.

      Koos van der Walt - 2014-04-24 12:52

En Corrie praat n bollie poef en moet maar pasop dat hy nie ook op die gevaarlys verkeer nie.Stank vir dank........ONS VIR JOU SUID AFRIKA.

  • Ivor Jennett - 2014-04-24 09:58

He was axed because it took him 9 years as coach of the U19 team before he eventually won the WC trophy.

      Jeane-Pierre Tollemache - 2014-04-24 11:18

And 22 years since re-admission and still no other coach could win a world cup- catch-wake-up dude!

      James Eayrs - 2014-04-24 12:52

Why wasn't he then fired after 3 years? Why after NINE? Why did it then take so long Ivor?

      UnlimitedLFB - 2014-04-24 13:02

It’s because he is white…….. That it took that long to fire an under achieving person

      Atholl Canterbury - 2014-04-25 01:35

Ivor, it's good to apply numbers to a problem .... in order to arrive at a conclusion .... . now put the following numbers into your pipe : ...--{ In 9 years ... the SA Under 19's lost 4 (four) matches in All World Cup Tournaments }-- ...then add the following numbers: ...U19 WC 2014 results : ..."Team of the tournament" (World Team vs Mars) ...SA {4} players {Eng 2 / Ind 2 / Bangd 1 / WIndies 1 / Pak 1 / Aus 0 } ........Aiden Markram (capt) (South Africa) (370 runs @ 123.33) ........Yaseen Valli (South Africa) (240 runs @ 80, 11 wickets @ 10.81) ........Justin Dill (South Africa) (12 wickets @ 12.50) ........Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) (14 wickets @ 10.28) . and smoke it.

what a bunch of bull excrement! so let me get this right... You WIN the U-19 World Cup and get fired? i could say so many things in many vivid words about the government and the Minister of Sport and all those who are dooming our country. SPORT is all we have at this moment in time and you want to 'F' it all up now. RIP top 4 places in any sport, except for football!!!!

  • Gaeleen - 2014-04-24 10:05

Wrong colour skin. Once again experience and ability means nothing. Typical SA

  • Prince Themba TheFirst - 2014-04-24 10:06

This is very unfair, by the way I'm black...if I remember correctly this is the coach who had the balls to play Thami and Hashim when no one else would.

      Francois Van Wyk - 2014-04-24 11:59

      Exactly.....

  • Pietse Genade - 2014-04-24 10:13

What a racist country. Everything, everywhere is about race, race, race. Despicable. I don't know where this myth of a rainbow nation came about.

      John Stoltz - 2014-04-25 10:29

Pietse, the racist portion of the RSA are those people who experienced a mental block and total brain degeneration since 1994!! All other South Africans are normal and not ANC supporters!!

  • Pietse Genade - 2014-04-24 10:17

Jennings should consult with "Solidariteit" so they can thake this racist lot to court.

  • Graham Patrick Hayes - 2014-04-24 10:18

  • UnlimitedLFB - 2014-04-24 10:28

Will you people stop complaining, truth is Jennings has been an u19 coach for 9 years that’s a lot of time. Maybe he will now be finally used properly at a larger stage maybe Franchise Team coach so that we can see if he has what it takes to be considered for the proteas job or he is just another big mouth who does nothing but criticize. No one is going to grow in this country if all we want is person to do the same job for the rest of his life…

  • Bench86 - 2014-04-24 10:35

I feel sorry for the two new appointed coaches too. They will be firebranded as BEE appointments (which they are), and they will be under immense pressure to perform better than Ray (which they very possibly can't, because how do you top a world cup win?). The sport watching public will tear them apart like they did with Peter de Villiers. CSA did NO ONE a favour here.

  • Bench86 - 2014-04-24 10:35

who else thinks cricket sa should be banned.

  • Thomas Squara - 2014-04-24 10:46

  • Jan de Beer - 2014-04-24 10:52

Too all CSA sponsors please take note that I am: 1. Not watching this political channel called cricket anymore 2. Will not use my hard earned money to attend any CSA organised games 3. Will try (where possible) not to use products that sponsor CSA

      Marius Santana - 2014-04-24 11:20

Ditto Jan, I'm so with you there! Now can we all for once agree and boycott this lot until cricket is cricket again?

  • Marius Santana - 2014-04-24 11:03

Tell you what Haroon Lorgat you enjoy watching SA Under-19 I certainly wont... and neither will a whole lot of my friends and family because we deplore racism and a-holes like you and ol Fikile! What have you done for grassroots cricket in this country? You earn fat salaries while kids play cricket in the streets in the townships... you use up all the money traveling 1st class overseas and most notably you are not even qualified to manage a bingo team ... only qualification you have is that of being a racist! I want to see if you will still be sitting there if the sponsors pull out because no one's watching the game and you don't get a salary! And you have the audacity to say you may employ him as a consultant because the people you employed obviously don't know what they dong!

  • Harry Kong - 2014-04-24 11:08

No wonder the so called "Super powers" of cricket want distance themselves from CSA. Maybe they just tired of dealing with incompetent corrupt cronies who's personal agendas overtake the good of the game!

  • Trevor Bakeberg - 2014-04-24 11:11

Yep steal get a promotion... Win a word cup get fired! Way to go SA, be proud. Personally I for one will NOT be following cricket if quotas are introduced... Why waste my time and emotions!

  • Jack Akkers - 2014-04-24 11:13

    Pure racism!!!

  • Justin Sly - 2014-04-24 11:22

Too white for the job, unfortunately. Sorry Ray. It is the racist wave sweeping over cricket. No longer, "The best man for the job", not it is the most non-white man for the job.

  • Justin Sly - 2014-04-24 11:25

At the end of the day, no-one wins, cricket is the biggest loser. The cANCer, killing SA a little more everyday. Political interference in sport never works.

  • Paul Cleverley - 2014-04-24 11:29

There goes another once proud institution down the toilet. In 10 years the cricket team will be "up there" with Zimbabwe.

  • Leon Kotze - 2014-04-24 11:33

Because he is white, that is why.Proof me wrong.

  • Peter Readhead - 2014-04-24 11:35

Disgraceful. Remember it took Alex Ferguson 9 years to win a Premiership with United and that was with the same players. Jet only gets to spend time with the boys selected for probably a max of 2 years. Well done Jet, there are bigger and better things waiting for you out there.

      UnlimitedLFB - 2014-04-24 12:26

Are you also saying we need to give Domingo the same amount of time to prove himself?
