Cape Town - Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar have both leapfrogged Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka to become joint No. 1 on the ICC Reliance Mobile Test rankings for batsmen following their outstanding performances in the third Castle Test at Sahara Park Newlands.
It means that for the first time the Proteas now have the No. 1 ranked player in the world in Test cricket in all three major categories of best batsman, best bowler and best all-rounder.
Kallis, who picked up no fewer than 77 ratings points in the Castle Test series after making an aggregate of 498 runs in the series including a double century and two other centuries, has long been rated the best all-rounder in the five-day game and there are no immediate challengers to him in sight. He is currently 78 points ahead of second-placed Daniel Vettori of New Zealand.
Kallis previously held the No. 1 batting ranking 6 years ago after the Newlands Test against England in 2005 when he made his previous highest score for this ground of 149. In the latest match against India he improved that to 161.
Tendulkar has been rated world No. 1 on numerous previous occasions going back to 1994. Remarkably he has yet to achieve a rating of 900 points which is regarded as the benchmark for the super elite. Both he and Kallis, who has a career highest rating of 935, are now both on 883 points with Sangakkara on 882.
With only one Test series (between New Zealand and Pakistan) still on the go before interest switches to the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup these ratings will remain unchallenged for the next few months.
As is the case with Kallis in the all-rounder stakes, Dale Steyn remains clear of the field as the best bowler. In spite of taking 6 wickets including his 16th career five-for at Newlands he only gained 2 ranking points from the match and thus remains on 899, one point shy of the elite level of 900 points.
He is a stunning 106 points ahead of second-placed Graeme Swann of England.
Proteas’ ranked in the top 20:
Batting: Jacques Kallis (joint 1st), AB de Villiers (11th), Hashim Amla (12th), Graeme Smith (joint 15th)
Bowling: Dale Steyn (1st), Morne Morkel (4th), Paul Harris (16th)
All-rounders (top five): Jacques Kallis (1st)
