Cape Town - The Proteas are in danger of being disposed from their No 2 Test ranking position should they lose the third and final Test against India at Newlands.

ICC Media and Communications Manager, James Fitzgerald, confirmed South Africa's demotion, albeit by "a fraction of a ratings point".

The Proteas, currently engaged in day four action against the No 1-ranked Indians, will slip to No 3 in the ICC rankings should they lose the Newlands Test (and the series 2-1) - and if England manage to complete a 3-1 Ashes victory over Australia.

England for their part, appear in command of the fifth and final Test in Sydney, going to stumps on day three on 488/7 in their first innings, after having bowled Australia out for 280.
