Bangalore - Yuvraj Singh has smashed an unbeaten 68 from just 29 balls to help the Royal Challengers Bangalore post an imposing total of 186-4 and victory by 16 runs in their IPL match against the Delhi Daredevils at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.
The supersport.com website reports that the Daredevils managed just 170-7 in reply and never looked likely to stage a serious challenge despite a lusty 48 from South Africa’s J-P Duminy whose knock came from just 30 balls and contained three fours and three sixes.
Yuvraj struck a remarkable nine sixes in his innings, including two ‘hat-tricks’ with three in a row against Proteas legspinner Imran Tahir and Rahul Shukla in the final over which cost an eye-watering 27 including a wide and a no ball, and four sixes in total.
The Indian allrounder made light of a poor start by the RCB top order and his fireworks have made the home side strong favourites in a must-win game.
Chris Gayle’s stuttering tournament continued with another unconvincing display which saw him launch a brace of sixes and a four but still fail to score at better than a run a ball when he was bowled off a thick inside edge by Rahul Shukla for 22 from 23 deliveries.
Opening partner Parthiv Patel was barely more successful with 28 from 28 balls and skipper Virat Kohli’s nightmare tournament continued when he was run out for 10 from 11 deliveries placing huge pressure on AB de Villiers to accelerate the scoring at No 4.
The Proteas star did his best with a dazzling 33 from just 17 balls before medium pacer Siddarth Kaul hit the top of off stump. De Villiers’ delivery suggested a total of around 150 would be par but Yuvraj changed that perception.
Daredevils openers Quinton de Kock and Murali Vijay departed swiftly but Mayank Agarwal (31) produced a workmanlike recovery alongside captain Kevin Pietersen who overcame a comically inept start to post 33 from 29 balls before missing a huge leg-break from Yuzvendra Chahal to be stumped.
Duminy smashed 48 from just 30 balls before Mitchell Starc rearranged his stumps and that was effectively the end of the game. Daredevils, coached by Gary Kirsten, are now virtually assured of finishing bottom of the log while the Challengers still have a mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs.
