Deccan charge to victory

A slick Deccan Chargers team effort proved too much for the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, as they triumphed by 31 runs in Chennai.

Adam Gilchrist’s unit was especially efficient in the field, holding some fine catches and hustling the Super Kings to submission as they claimed their first win of the 2010 season.

Chaminda Vaas was exemplary for the Chargers, snaffling 3/21 in his four overs to throttle the life out of the Chennai top-order.

Matthew Hayden opted to leave his ‘mongoose’ bat behind, and the Super Kings generally lacked mongrel in the middle as they slumped to a deflating home defeat.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni struck a breezy 42 off 29 balls, but he had little support as his team collapsed under the constant Deccan pressure.

Justin Kemp threatened briefly with 22, but he was deceived expertly by the flight of Pragyan Ojha to be stumped just when it looked like the home side would mount some sort of challenge.

Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel clubbed 42 not out at the death, with three massive sixes, but by that stage the writing was squarely on the wall.

The Chargers’ own total of 190/4 was built around fine contributions by Gilchrist (38), Herschelle Gibbs (45) and Andrew Symonds (50).

The defending champion Chargers had lost their opening fixture, but will have been heartened by an extremely thorough performance against the dangerous Superkings unit.

The Chennai outfit, meanwhile, will go back to the drawing board after a clearly rusty performance in front of their home crowd.
