Bangalore keep IPL hopes alive

Johannesburg - A devastating innings from captain Virat Kohli set up the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a comfortable win in their IPL match against the Chennai Super Kings in Bangalore, reports the supersport.com website.

Zaheer Khan backed up his captain with a four wicket haul.

The match was reduced to eight overs each after a long delay for rain, and Kohli set up an impressive total of 106-2. It was too much for Chennai to match as they fell 24 runs short in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Full scorecard

Man-of-the-match Kohli promoted himself to open after MS Dhoni had won the toss and chosen to field first, and led the way with a scintillating innings of 56, scored off just 29 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes.

There was good support from Chris Gayle, plundering three successive sixes off Jason Holder on his way to 28.

CSK needed some luck to chase at over 13 to the over. Michael Hussey hit the first ball to the boundary, and lady luck smiled on him as he played on to Ravi Rampaul's next delivery only for the bails to stay in place.

However, Zaheer Khan struck with successive balls in the next over, sending back first Hussey as Lokesh Rahul took a good catch, and then Suresh Raina first ball. Dwayne Bravo was almost run out off the hat-trick ball.

Chennai were never able to recover from this setback. Murali Vijay did hit some blows on his way to a top score of 32 off 19 balls, and Dhoni smashed 24 off 10, but the visitors could never master the demanding asking rate.

Zaheer came back to bowl the final over, picking up two more wickets to finish with 4-17 in his spell of two overs.

Despite the loss, CSK finish top of the log and will play the Mumbai Indians in the first qualifier on Tuesday.

RCB have moved into fourth spot, level on points with the Sunrisers Hyderabad but with a significantly better net run rate. However, to remain in contention for the play-offs, they must hope that the Sunrisers lose their closing match tomorrow at home to the Kolkata Knight Riders.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
