AB 'ruins' Steyn friendship

Cape Town - Dale Steyn has taken to Twitter to sportingly acknowledge compatriot AB de Villiers’s blistering late assault on his bowling in an Indian Premier League thriller in Bangalore on Sunday.

De Villiers, combining crisp, orthodox stroke-play with some outrageous improvisation even against Steyn’s express pace for the Deccan Chargers, played a huge role in powering Royal Challengers Bangalore over the line at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

He took 23 runs off what turned out to be Proteas and former Titans team-mate Steyn’s third and last over, wrecking the latter’s hitherto commendable figures of 2-1-7-0 (including a maiden to Chris Gayle, of all people).

And as De Villiers finished on a whirlwind 47 not out off 17 balls in the five-wicket win, Steyn (@DaleSteyn62) tweeted: “Just wana congratulate @ABdeVilliers17 on that master battin display! I’d also like to say our friendship is nw hanging by a thread bud! Haha.”

Others in the Twitter world, who watched the amazing onslaught, joined in the praise.

“That has got to be some of the best I have seen from De Villiers – absolutely outstanding clean hitting, all around the park!” enthused former SA fast-medium bowler Steve Elworthy (@SteveElworthy).

Another Titans and Proteas stalwart active in the IPL, Albie Morkel (@AlbieMorkel), said simply: “Give that man a Bell’s! Take a bow @ABdeVilliers17.”

Former Proteas bowling coach Vincent Barnes (@VincentBarnes50) added: “@ABdeVilliers17 is the best batsman in the world at the moment.”

In a post-match press conference, De Villiers was quoted as saying: “Dale could have knocked me over with any of those balls, unfortunately for him I read it well, it was just my night.”

Awesome Rivalry, I think AB must bat higher.

      deonk - 2012-05-07 14:24

Like Herchelle? He was always pretty high wen he went out to bat. haha!

      CapeChappy - 2012-05-08 10:42

The commentators were having a discussion about whether Dhoni or DeVilliers was the better batsman... SERIOUSLY???? DeVilliers is just pure class. I agree with Barnes; probably the best batsman in the world on present form.

Those balls were crackers from Dale, AB's skills just shone through. If he had missed he would have lost middle and leg every ball (except the last one).

Excellent AB and what a thriller to watch!!!!!! I actually felt sorry for Dale as he is not used to such treatment but even he admitted there was not much he could do. I agree with one of the Tv commentators who said that if AB came in at no 3 the match would have been over much sooner - go AB!!!!!!!!!

  • Adino - 2012-05-07 13:03

I watched that game & by the 15th over thought that RCB was not going to make it. Enter AB stage left - WOW! What a fantastic display of batting. Really though, most of the Safrican players are doing quite well at the IPL - let's hope the selectors are keeping their eyes open & not using the same selection sheets they've been using for so long Also - Would love to Hashim in the next IPL

      Olive - 2012-05-07 13:38

I cannot understand the thumbs down - Ab was awesome - maybe morons who have no understanding as to what a great batsmen AB is. @ Sam LOL

      dhirshan.gobind - 2012-05-07 14:05

why is kholi the RCB captain though? young laity like that

      ian.levinson.7 - 2012-05-08 07:49

@Stephen, who cares, ignore them, wait for the thumbs down when we slaughter the poms, then you will really see sulking

  • rudi.debeer.5 - 2012-05-07 14:40

Must agree. AB is brilliant. RCB waste his talent batting him at 4/5.

I like it! I like it! The IPL T20 League came at the right time so that teams in the World Cup later this year can select their best players which will be ideal family entertainment. The only way I will play the game socially is to "go big or go home" batting wise. Supersport has done excellently to cover the matches and long may it prosper. Congrats!! Even our own domestic competition is popular. A point to remember is that there is no rule as to which batsman ends up batting during any match. Strategy is the key.

RC-(A)B!! Make him captian! Make him open! RCB will win the IPL. You can even make him open the bowling aswell! haha

  • ian.levinson.7 - 2012-05-08 07:47

In the IPL it would be very interesting to see AB open but i guess they would like to see one of there own countrymen do the damage, looks like they slipped up on that one

  • louise.patterton - 2012-05-08 13:02

AB De Villiers: Trieng Trieng. Hello Is It 6 2 4 6 4 1, Can I Talk to Steyn ?

  • Clive - 2012-05-09 06:51

The only good thing about IPL is the sportsman are making some good cash

  • Phil - 2012-05-09 09:33

How lucky is South Africa to have two players like Dale and AB. I wonder how England feels about taking on the Proteas later in the year?

      Gunner - 2012-05-09 13:59

Well Phil, they may be quite happy to face Steyntjie if he continues to bowl like that. Wessels made a good point about how the Proteas should use Dale in the shorter format of the game on "supercricket"...hope gazza and co have read his post. AB has been really great though in IPL 5...
