Proteas eye early spin option

Colombo - Switching to spinners in the power play will not be a bad game plan against Australia on a turning wicket, South Africa captain AB de Villiers said ahead of their World Twenty20 Super Eight clash on Sunday.

South Africa are in a must-win situation to keep their hopes for a semi-final berth alive after they lost a hard-fought game to Pakistan by two wickets on Friday.

Left arm spinner Robin Peterson struck with two wickets when de Villiers brought him on in the fourth over of the match against Pakistan.

"It worked really well for us and it's definitely a different approach and we haven't been doing it in the past," de Villiers told reporters ahead of the Colombo match.

"It's a very positive thing for us to bowl spinners in the first six overs and then we have seen the results come through like that.

"It is something to look at specially on this kind of wickets if it's turning a bit. Against the Australians, it's not a bad game plan."

However, de Villiers still hopes his fast bowlers can also deliver with wickets.

"We won't forget our pacemen who are on top of the world. Still I hope they will come back and take wickets against the Australians," he said.

Australia are unbeaten in the tournament and captain George Bailey said they have got a buffer after winning Friday's game against India by nine wickets.

"I know it is a great win, but in terms of just where it has set this up in this tournament it has put South Africa under pressure because they know they need to win their next two. We have that buffer," Bailey told reporters.

"Our best cricket has always been very, very good. The challenge in Twenty20 has been that gap between our best and the worst cricket. That's been the pleasing thing for me as we have been consistent so far."

Why are telling the opposition what you gonna do? R you grazy AB? Just go out an do the job.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 21:00

How does it help Australia knowing that we'll probably bowl some spin in the power play?

      UNITY - 2012-09-29 21:21

@Ashley.. Agree with u.. These pre-match press conferences ..are giving away too element of surprise..always keeps the oponent guessing! A variation in the attack , maybe start with one spinner one medium pacer, mix the variations all the time !!!change the field placings.. Hansie was a master at this!

      andrew.hendrikse - 2012-09-29 21:31

It's a little late now ....They should have done this already against Pakistan!! 20/20 hind-sight by AB,Gary ans Alan is not very clever!!

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 21:46

Lol, what element of surprise?? When Robin P starts measuring out his run-up and AB tosses him the ball, do you really think the Aus batsmen are going to be surprised? I can just see Shane Watson signaling the dressing room frantically for new gloves. "Help me, Mickey, the opponents are using spin. I don't know what to do! I've never faced spin in a T20 power play before! Send me out a note with instructions!"

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 22:02

Andrew, did you actually read the article? AB talks about having done it against Pakistan. You guys do know the difference between the power play and the death overs, right? The power play is the six overs at the start. That is what AB is talking about.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 22:11

lol everybody bowls spinners 1st over at some time in t20s. it's becoming the norm especially on turning tracks. i'm still not convinced by these sa spinners. the 2 of 4 wickets they took against pak was just bad shot selection.

  • boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 20:21

get out watson, warner and hussey early and you have a good chance of winning.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 21:49

Yeah, them's the big three. Although if Bailey and Maxwell get going, they can also be damaging. On the batting side, I hope at least Hash gets a start. Levi versus Hoggie's wrong-un is just going to be painful. Almost as bad as Levi v Saeed.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 22:09

you need faf in place of levi or amla at the top. look at ipl csk, the guy was solid as an opener. i'd worry about hussey, always screws over the opposition if he bats too long.

2 very boring matches today, hopefully our group will have some excitement tomorrow.

  • Joe - 2012-09-29 20:54

Lets not have a f@ck up, you're not gonna let us down are you?

  • UNITY - 2012-09-29 21:02

You gotta be joking!! These guys should go through the news 24 readers comments more often, well at least they finally can smell the coffee, Barnes and pace 0- spin 1

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 21:12

Hahaha. Did you watch SL just take WI apart today? Did you notice that SL had two world class spinners who only bowled two overs each? Did you notice that Mahela gave the ball to the seamers for the last four overs, even when Jeevan Mendis had only bowled two overs and taken 1 for 12? I suppose, in your view, Mahela is the dumbest T20 captain ever because he doesn't use spin at the end. You also don't watch very much cricket if you think that using spin in the power play is new to either AB or the Proteas. We were doing it back in England. And even then, Bumble was commenting that it had become standard T20 practice for teams to get in an over or two of spin right at the start. But yes, AB is only doing it because he read your brilliantly insightful comments on News24 articles, lol.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 21:17

Incidentally, you do know that the power play is at the START of the innings and not at the end, yeah?

      UNITY - 2012-09-29 21:38

Barnes , did u smell the coffee from the last game..I don't think so! I am all for an all round performance..but the captain should read on the day, what is working when we leading at 77-7... Pace or spin? Steyn or botha..

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 22:14

i remember last t20, afridi used ajmal in the last over against australia. aus needed 23 off 6. mike hussey screwed us over , 3 sixes in one over. spin doesn't always work at the death.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 22:19

I don't need to smell the coffee from the last game. I've been watching cricket enough to know that teams will turn to their seamers in the death overs. Always. When Aus and Pak played a Super Over prior to the WC, Pak chose Umar Gul to bowl their over, Aus chose Pat Cummins. And Pak could have used Saeed Ajmal. When NZ and SL played a Super Over, NZ chose Tim Southee, SL chose Slinga Malinga. Today, Mahela didn't bowl out a leg spinner who was going great guns and still had two overs left. He turned to his seamers. That is how captains work. In the IPL, you will see it time and time and time and time again. The death overs bowlers are Slinga, Morne, Dale, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brett Lee, Zak Khan, etc. Not Chawla, Ashwin, Baji, Hoggie, Warne, Botha and Co. RCB used Virat Kohli in the 19th over against Chennai. Albie gave them a spanking they won't forget in a hurry. The fact that it didn't work yesterday doesn't mean that cricket theory has now been rewritten. We failed yesterday because our seamers couldn't hit their straps, not because the idea of bowling pace at the death is stupid and "everybody knows that you must bowl spin". Slinga bowled three slow bouncers in the 19th over today with the Windies looking to smash everything out the park and wickets in hand. He gave away just three runs in the over. That is how you do it. If Slinga had bowled for us yesterday, Pak wouldn't have reached 90.

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 22:31

yes barnsey. the objective of the seamers are to bowl yorkers so that the opposition don't slog you over for six. morkel missed his lengths he bowled a full toss for 6. the quicks are supposed to clean up the tail very quickly, but they missed their lengths and gul came to the party.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-29 22:45

Finally, someone who understands cricket. Thanks boom.afridi.

      UNITY - 2012-09-30 08:36

ICC's T20 top 10 bowlers, are majority spinners, Barned u should know yor stats! Afridi yor batting sucks , but u are amongst the top 10 as a spinner! Lastly if u guys can read,I in my earlier comments, I'm backing the team for \an all round performance\ doesn't matter whether its pace or spin! As long as they win the T20 tournament and make us proud as a nation!!!!

  • gunner.zn.5 - 2012-09-29 21:11

Proteas and India will win tomorrow...will make Tuesday's games effectively quarter finals..

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-29 22:15

no mr arsene wenger, we will come after india and beat them like we did in the warm up match.

  • Neal Sing - 2012-09-29 21:20

Some Water please for all the batsmen to prevent CHOKING again!

  • mag.sam.338 - 2012-09-29 21:26

We need 3 qualified spinners- Peterson, Botha and Taahir. Duminy as 4th option. Both Morkels out, Tsotsobe in, Taahir in. Didn't Gary have the foresight to include Taahir in his squad?

      UNITY - 2012-09-29 21:31

Tahir bowled well in the ICC world cup on the subcontinent, I'm surprised he was left out! I guess his weakness maybe we don't have batting depth to support him! Therefore he is not an Umar gul at no.8 or 9!
