Proteas brush Sri Lanka aside

2012-09-22 15:56

Hambantota - South Africa beat hosts Sri Lanka by a convincing 32-run margin in a rain-shortened seven-over-a-side World Twenty20 group C match here on Saturday.

Full scorecard

The Proteas were good with both bat and ball as their pacemen never allowed the Sri Lankan batsmen to chase a daunting 79-run target.

Skipper AB de Villiers smashed two sixes and a boundary during his 13-ball 30 while Hamshim Amla (16) and Faf du Plessis (13) were the other main run contributors in a total of 78-4 after South Africa were sent in to bat.

Sri Lanka were without their ace spinner Ajantha Mendis, who took 6-8 in their win over Zimbabwe, after suffering from a side strain.

Heavy rain delayed the start by two and a half hours as a sell-out 35 000 crowd waited anxiously for action and although they got it late the fireworks in a shorter game gave them some consolation.

Sri Lanka were never in the hunt, losing star duo Tillakaratne Dilshan (nought) and Mahela Jayawardene (four) in the first two overs.

Dale Steyn was South Africa's best bowler with 2-10. Dilshan Munaweera and Kumar Sangakkara made 13 each.

De Villiers said his team is ready for the next round.

"Beating Sri Lanka is nice because they are one of the top teams and now we are ready for the Super Eights, we didn't take anything for granted and it was nice to win," said the South African captain.

Jayawardene said it was tough in a reduced match.

"It is always tough in a rain reduced match. We were without Mendis because we didn't want to take risk with important matches coming up," said Jayawardene. "We must improve our fielding."

South Africa, who finished top of the group, and Sri Lanka qualified for the Super Eight rounds. Both had beaten Zimbabwe in their opening matches.

Sri Lanka will be in group one of the Super Eights while South Africa will be in group two, regarded as the group of death with India, Australia and Pakistan likely to be the other teams.

Well Done boys........I hope you will also win when it matters.

      UNITY - 2012-09-23 06:45

Congrats to the Proteas..on a day when the D/L can really mess a win. Beware, Sri lanka rested their star spinner? Signs that they knew they are already in the super 8s,I would prepare the spinners for the final set of pitches, and the batsmen to attack the spinners!!!

Great knock by AB de Viliers and Duminy finished it off nicely their in the end for us to get that very good score of 78/4 in 7 overs.First time in a long time Amla didn't top score for us.Hasn't seen that one coming(LOL).Now who's next New Zealand,Pakistan or Bangladesh in the Super 8's?Bing it on!

  • gerhardus.windpomp - 2012-09-22 16:13

    Well done!

  • mrova.blaza - 2012-09-22 16:16

Nonsensical form of cricket this, talk about the commercialisation of the game.

  • david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-22 16:26

Well done Proteas. Didn't expect it to be this one-sided. If we can control the mental side of things, we should win the tourny if we perform like this. Go Proteas!!

  • edwin.phadu - 2012-09-22 16:29

Keep the momentum going boys into the super 8

  • Ashmolsan3 - 2012-09-22 16:37

Well done Proteas. My question is was the victory worth an inclusion in the group of death which we aren't likely to come out

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-22 17:22

We were in the group of death regardless of what happened today.

      gerald.smith.9041083 - 2012-09-23 09:40

If you want to be the best you have to beat the best, regardless of what group you are in.

  • timothy.vanas - 2012-09-22 16:43

Well done boys but we really need you to do this when it counts.

  • malcolm.j.patterson.1 - 2012-09-22 16:45

GO SA, we're proud of you and AB you beaut, Jon T all over again albeit with gloves on. Pity 4 of the world's best teams are in the same group whilst the B division sides (except for SL) are all in one group.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-22 16:58

AB is really leading by example! Just glad he wasnt hurt

  • boom.afridi.56 - 2012-09-22 16:51

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-22 20:03

@andre, yawn - there were players from durban and the cape. as well as the eastern cape you idiot

  • mthunzi.phakathi - 2012-09-22 18:27

I would rather watch a 5th days play of a tight test match. Opening morning is more interesting than the quickie we are watching. The bench mark is test cricket, t20 has its place now, however some evolutions are more detrimental than anything.

  • justin.roper.3705 - 2012-09-22 18:56

Well done boys great knock AB, and the bowlers came to the party again very happy guys keep on going, this year is world cup year for u guy

  • spear.tackle.7 - 2012-09-22 19:27

    Like a boss !

  • Granville Paulse - 2012-09-22 19:34

Good win! AB is a bloody good cricketer. We do need him to calm down in the field though. At times he seems an emotional wreck. When he is calm the team stays calm. Poker face. Very good to see Botha helping him out.
