Colombo - Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty grabbed three wickets and all-rounder Shane Watson took two as Australia kept South Africa down to 146-5 in the World Twenty20 in Colombo on Sunday.

Live scorecard

The Proteas, who need a win to stay in contention for the semi-finals after losing to Pakistan on Friday, lost quick wickets after being sent in to bat in the Super Eights match.

JP Duminy's 30 was the best score by a top-order batsman as South Africa slipped to 86-5 before Farhaan Behardien and Robin Peterson added 60 from 35 balls for the unbroken sixth wicket.

Behardien made 31 not out and Peterson returned unbeaten on a brisk 32 off 19 balls, the pair taking 28 runs in the final two overs.

Australia, who beat India in their first group two match, will close in on a semi-final berth if they win.

Doherty, opening the bowling after replacing seamer Daniel Christian for the match, removed Richard Levi with the third delivery and sent back Jacques Kallis in his second over.

It became 33-3 in the sixth over when Watson struck fifth ball as Hashim Amla edged a leg-side catch to wicket-keeper Matthew Wade after making 17.

Doherty, returning for his second spell in the 11th over, had Duminy stumped and Watson dismissed skipper AB de Villiers to reduce the Proteas to 86-5 in the 15th over.

      The retards lost.

  • pagel.trivia - 2012-09-30 14:05

Probably not good enough - let's hold thumbs it is.

  • Joe - 2012-09-30 14:27

When there's no pressure, we're awesome. As soon as we need to win a match to progress, we fall like a house of cards.SO DISAPPOINTING!!!

  • benjamin.manuals - 2012-09-30 14:31

watson choke SA out of 20/20

  • sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-30 14:31

Watson will finish this with 5 or 6 overs to spare you'll see.Look at Morkel he started so well and then his brain goes dead and gets hammered by Watson. There's the choking problem as clear as mud.All it takes is just stupid incidents like that and the Proteas collapse.Same old story because no matter who the coach is,the mental retardedness of the Proteas in major tournaments goes on.

      pagel.trivia - 2012-09-30 14:40

Take Parnell out of the attack!! Batsmen need to come to party as well. Levi is a serious passenger at the moment.

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-30 14:44

Not just Levi. They bring in Wayne Parnell who is a bloody "gasleak" brainfart bowler when comes to not doing your bit when your team needs you.Tsotsobe is one of the world's best ODI bowlers and yet for some reason management prefers Parnell over him.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-30 14:50

Tsotsobe had one or two bad games and he's forgotten about. Parnell does nothing but suck yet is chosen. I just don't get it!! Faf would have been a better choice that Parnell. Apart from those excellent 4 overs up front, our seamers yet again bowl short and wide. Crap considering that they are supposed to be our strength.

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-30 15:19

Sean, Watson has hammered every attack in this tournament. Spin, pace, doesn't matter, he'll smack everything. He was just playing himself in during the first few overs. Then, like Gayle, he cuts loose. It's not because the bowlers have a brain fart. You can only contain for so long when a guy is in Watson's current form. The guy's had a phenomenal tournament, top of both the batting and bowling. That's what makes limited overs cricket such a lottery. One guy can turn the whole match. And, with batsmen particularly, form is often fleeting. Hash was terrific in England, not that great now. Watson wasn't that good in the IPL, outstanding now. You've just got to catch the tournament when your top guys are in the form of their life. Like KP in the last T20 WC. We haven't done that yet. But it's not something you can plan for.

  • Joe - 2012-09-30 14:39

And how Parnell is STILL in the SA god he is useless, he makes Richard Levi look like Don Bradman.

  • NguVala - 2012-09-30 14:48

There's an offbreak bowler by the name of Subreyan for the dolphins... He is much better than both Peterson and Botha combined!!! Our team really looks less talented than many in the tournament. The extended breaks for players has not worked because they are still choking. They look mediocre out there

  • dieter.muller.942145 - 2012-09-30 14:58

    Quota druggy tik kop parnell.....

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-09-30 15:07

The ****er can't even field properly.

  • ettiene.esterhuizen.7 - 2012-09-30 15:03

Now this is what I call high quality CHOKING!!! SA dissapoints again

      malcolm.j.patterson.1 - 2012-09-30 15:32

Absolutely pathetic, If you've been instructed to loose the game at least make it look real. You and our boys contrived to loose from what appeared to be an invincible position on Friday, you've now become an embarrasment to the nation.

  • mdu.s.khumalo - 2012-09-30 15:08

    Oh they choke again

  • ekke.oupa - 2012-09-30 15:09

    We are Proteas. Not Springboks.

  • gerhard.bacharach - 2012-09-30 15:10

Same old, same old. How did we ever become number 1 in T20 cricket???

      richard.barnes.3914 - 2012-09-30 15:25

Well, the rankings are a bit screwed up atm. Aus came into this tournament behind Ireland, heh. But you get that when they first start with rankings and don't have many games and a large statistic database to work from.

  • frank.glenleary - 2012-09-30 15:13

Well plaayed sa you guys are a sure bet to choke so dont wory u will be no 1 after the world cup

  • malcolm.j.patterson.1 - 2012-09-30 15:25

The commentator has just said, "over and over SA has snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" I rest my case. Guys you don't deserve to be on the same field as the likes of G Pollock, E Barlow etc

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-09-30 15:46

    Once again LOSERS/CHOKERS.
