Morkel faces late fitness test

Cape Town - Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel will undergo a late fitness test on Thursday morning, after suffering from spasms and a stiff lower back during the Proteas' warm-up match against New Zealand on Monday.

Morkel went for an MRI scan in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Tuesday morning, which produced inconclusive results.

"Albie woke up feeling much better this morning (Tuesday) but we sent him for an MRI scan as a precautionary measure," team manager, Mohammed Moosajee said in a statement released to the media on Tuesday.

"The results from the scan are inconclusive but the positive aspect for us is that he is improving by the day.

"He will continue to receive treatment from the team physiotherapist, Brandon Jackson, and a decision on his availability for our opening match of the ICC World Twenty20 will only be taken on Thursday morning, subject to him passing a fitness test."

The Proteas beat the Kiwis by nine runs on Monday. They square up against Zimbabwe in their opening match in Hambantota on Thursday.
