Proteas in SABC blackout

Cape Town – South Africa’s challenge at the ICC Champions Trophy tournament in the UK, starting on Thursday, will be screened only on SuperSport domestically.

Stuck in the office without a TV? If so, be sure to follow Sport24's LIVE interactive commentary on Thursday.

That much can be gleaned both from official SABC television listings – none of the Proteas’ three Group B games feature at present, either in live or delayed form – and from a statement issued by Cricket South Africa on Tuesday.

In the announcement, CSA said they had noted “the various comments on social media and regular media platforms around the televised broadcast” of the tournament.

“We would like to clarify that CSA has no say concerning the television rights for ICC (International Cricket Council) events, which is a matter of direct negotiation between the various broadcasters and the IDI, the commercial wing of the ICC.

“As things stand, (pay broadcaster) SuperSport has acquired the rights to the tournament for sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, from the ICC.

“Any free-to-air broadcaster can thus negotiate with SuperSport International for the free-to-air rights.”

SuperSport has already indicated that it will screen all Champions Trophy matches live on SS2 and HD2, and will introduce injured Proteas Test captain Graeme Smith as a guest pundit.

National broadcaster the SABC traditionally screens only home international matches featuring the Proteas, and also usually shows South African matches at fuller World Cups.

AB de Villiers’s team start their campaign against ODI No 1-ranked India in Cardiff on Thursday (11:30 SA time).

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
