Golden handshake for Majola?

2012-09-07 09:22

Johannesburg - Suspended Cricket SA (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola tabled a settlement to walk away from his job, according to a report on Friday.

The New Age reported that Majola's lawyer, Pumezo David, confirmed that they made an offer to the CSA that Majola would leave if he was paid two year's salary.

"We're waiting for the CSA to come back to our client to inform us whether they've accepted our settlement offer or not," David told the newspaper.

"It's been over two weeks since our meeting and we're still to receive any correspondence from the CSA. We are not sure as to what is taking them so long to get back to us."

David would not elaborate on the details of the settlement.

The newspaper reported that Majola earned about R2 million a year and could walk away with about R4 million if CSA paid him out.

Majola was suspended in March following the release of the Nicholson report, which found he had paid R4.7 million in bonuses to CSA staff without clearance from the board or the remuneration committee.

However, CSA's lawyer Nicholas Preston told the newspaper that it was unlikely that the offer would be accepted.

"Proposals from Majola and CSA could not be agreed upon as they were miles apart from each other," said Preston.

"This means that in all likelihood the CSA will continue with the disciplinary process against Majola next month."

According to the report, two affiliated presidents, who did not want to be named, said the CSA wanted to take the matter to Sport Minister Fakile Mbalula for approval.

Mbalula's adviser Justin de Allende said the matter had nothing to do with the ministry and it was between Majola and the CSA.

IT is the Cadre way. Be incompetent as possible, get suspended for a year or two on full pay and then you get fired with millions as a handout!

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-09-07 09:34

it seems that the more incompetant you are, the more golden the handshake.

      mlucejko - 2012-09-07 09:40

This guy deserves F%#K ALL.. he defrauded the CSA !! He should go to Jail !!

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-09-07 11:39

@mlucejko and repay the bonus that he stole.

      amanda.vandenberg.758 - 2012-09-07 12:25

Can you believe this, he committed a crime he should be fired! No wonder crime pays in this country!!!!

  • herman.mouton - 2012-09-07 09:29

Since when does the guilty party get to make the offer??? Only in Africa....

      p.borchard - 2012-09-07 09:45

Here's an offer - A JAIL TERM FOR STEALING MONEY FROM SOUTH AFRICA'S CRICKETERS! Only in South Africa do you get rewarded for being a bloody crook!

      herman.mouton - 2012-09-07 11:45

@Mandy - If you travel a lot to other African countries like i do, you would know what i meant. In some of the countries from the moment you set foot on their soil the games begin....USD20 here....USD20 there and off you go......and just because you are white, they automatically think you are's a sad story

  • jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-09-07 09:30

Just FIRE him and get it over with!!! Skelm BLXM!!!!!

      jannie.koekemoer.58 - 2012-09-07 11:54

agree - he took his handshake beforehand and I hope CSA will pay him nothing......

  • ingrid.oberholzer - 2012-09-07 09:34

I bet he gets moved to another position with some sporting body with a exhorbitant salary and benefits, like Gideon Sam of SASCOC who embrassed himself and then was moved. Your are correct this is the Cadre Way.

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-09-07 11:22

Best he applies to SAFA because they are a corrupt as Majola. He will fit in perfectly.

  • croix.mactee - 2012-09-07 09:34

Now Mr Majola, don't you think you have already received your 'golden handshake' in the form of an illegal bonus? Greed is a nasty personality trait. Such a well-paid job, and then you wanted more? But now you want even more still? The worse part is, you did not even do a great job.

      shooshyu.tu - 2012-09-07 11:42

Hasn't he been on full pay whilst on suspension and just how long has that been already, more than makes up for his arrogant tabling of 2 yrs salary, greedy Baas Teds.

  • daniel.v.wyk - 2012-09-07 09:35

Do NOT pass begin, do not collect 4 Million! Go straight to jail!

  • jose.d.santos.9041 - 2012-09-07 09:37

    he deserves a golden shower

      keith.ball.7505 - 2012-09-07 09:40

He deserves a golden cricket bat stuck up his ar*e!

      dick.etheridge - 2012-09-07 09:46

  • nicolaas.geldenhuys - 2012-09-07 09:39

Corrupt bastard. Just get the hell outta there you prick!

  • erich.goosen - 2012-09-07 09:40

If CSA agrees to this blantant black mail it will be a huge shame and will CSA be also guilty of conspiracy. The honourable thing will be to have a disciplinary hearing and get rid of the man. Unfortunately, Mr Majola is not the only culprit and that is why certain members of CSA are shy to take any steps. If it is within your powers, Mr Minister of Sport, get rid of the nest of vipers.

      p.borchard - 2012-09-07 09:52

There are too many skeletons rattling around in the cupboard. If the rest of the board and the minister were not involved in the scam, they would not be too scared to take a stand.

  • peter.ndamase - 2012-09-07 09:41

What an arrogant, corrupt idiot!!! No offers, let the disciplinary unfolds. What a dodgy character.

  • koketso.senabe - 2012-09-07 09:47

Can't we offer Zuma a golden handshake too?

      attie.gerber.1 - 2012-09-07 10:56

i don't think the govt has enough cash for that

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-09-07 09:50

Fire him as soon as possible, 6 months pay is more than what he deserves.

  • FinalJustice - 2012-09-07 09:57

    Bloody criminal, idiot!

  • danny.levin.351 - 2012-09-07 09:59

Only in SA does a corrupt thief who was fired because of corruption get to keep the stolen money and get a golden handshake....

  • senzo.mathebula - 2012-09-07 10:07

No golden handshakes maladmnistration! Why is CSA taken so long to disciple this guy? I have no sympathy for ppl like this, they r the reason we don't have crickets fields in the townships.

      elspeth.hassall - 2012-09-07 10:59

You have a VERY good point there!

  • jaco.botha.75 - 2012-09-07 10:08

Oky, so after all the money made from fraudulent deals, he still expects CSA to sponsor him for a full two year salary. The idea of being involved with the country's sport is for the love of the sport, not to squash them for every dime they own.

  • TdJ01 - 2012-09-07 10:15

I need a job like this. A job you totally suck at and get paid big bucks to leave!! What a pleasure!

  • terrylee.heuer - 2012-09-07 10:20

Most under investigation get a nice golden handshake isn't MONEY what its all about anyway these people are suspended for months even a year with full pay and then still walk away smiling!!!

  • francie.potgieter - 2012-09-07 10:36

He has already received the golden handshake when he accepted the bonus. Greedy idiot.

  • mark.haupt.31 - 2012-09-07 10:36

Ah, the delightful workings of ineptocracy.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-07 10:38

Another golden handshake?. Why, he has been giving himself golden handshakes all the time.

  • niel.phillips.7 - 2012-09-07 10:43

+ the R4Mil he's stolen it's a helluva handshake.....wonder where this clown will surface in the future or will he just take his cash and enjoy his "Jan Tas"

  • anton.coetzee.5 - 2012-09-07 11:00

Charge him!!!! Take him to court, maybe he will spend a few weeks in prison like all the other thieves.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-09-07 11:04

WHY!WHY! you already STOLE to much and now you want more. WTF

  • michael.ferraris - 2012-09-07 11:05

this is bloody ridiculous! he stole money and should be in jail but lets just give him another 4m! surely that could be used to fund development and purchase required resources! CSA you are so soft!

      lionel.jeoffreys.5 - 2012-09-07 11:14

Read the article, CSA haven't offered him 4m, Majola and co are asking for a settlement of 4m which CSA are still to respond to

  • claude.felbert - 2012-09-07 11:16

Majola should pay back to SA Cricket and count himself lucky to be in court or worse.

  • monroek1 - 2012-09-07 14:31

Wants a “golden handshake” for stealing wow who is he trying to brainwash here??? Trying to plead not guilty to the public or what??? I think this is just insulting people`s intelligence come on maaaan !*not a smart move at all* loool

  • christopher.m.lowe - 2012-09-07 16:16

Gerald Majola is a LIAR and a THIEF. He STOLE over R1,5m in illegal bonuses that he tried to hide and tried to pass off hundreds of thousands of rands of his wife's and childrens' travel and accommodation costs as valid CSA expenses. Then he LIED under oath about it to the Nicholson Inquiry. They soon had the measure of him and found accordingly. This grubby, dirty, odious little toad of a man is a disgrace and an embarrassment. He should be in jail, not 'negotiating' with the very body that he tried to screw. I trust CSA will tell him to take a hike. And charge him with theft.

  • irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-09-07 16:55

The nerve of this arrogant little thief. He wants to be paid to walk away? Put the piece of filth in jail already!!!

  • abraham.vandervyver - 2012-09-07 19:29

This guy is a crook and a conman, not to mention his staggering incompetence. He should be given a golden boot in the behind.

  • eddie.norton1 - 2012-09-08 08:09

A good settlement would be 1 months pay for every year worked ! Thats what the CCMA would grant ! Only if he repaid the IPL Bonuses. Which were not his to receive.

  • vincent.s.cupido - 2012-09-10 12:46

Can this guy just please do us all a favour and leave the scenes immediately and make us forget about him, he is already surrounded by a lot of controversy and he is not helping his course either by demanding two year's salary, all he achieves is proving his greed to South African sporting fans. He owes all South African cricket fans an apology for bringing the game into disrepute, and I won't forget about the reports that he created factions within CSA and played these factions off against each other, he orchestrated the departure of the former CSA president. Now that it is his turn to depart, he wants more millions, what a shame, I just wish that CSA can expedite his hearing and his exit from the public sporting administrative and management arena.
