Cape Town - Cricket South Africa (CSA) officially entered a new era on Monday when Gary Kirsten and the newcomers to the Proteas’ management team officially took up their positions.
“We can look forward to an exciting future with a World Cup-winning coach directing the fortunes of the Proteas,” commented CSA CEO Gerald Majola.
“We are currently ranked No 2 in Test cricket and No 4 in ODI competition and we will be looking to improve those positions as we prepare for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka and the inaugural Test cricket World Championship playoffs the following year.
“It is gratifying that we have a strong support system behind the Proteas and also the financial strength to maintain and increase our development programmes to produce the stars of tomorrow.
“The success of these programmes is reflected in the successful tours of our under-19 and Emerging Players’ squads to England and Australia respectively.
“The reports of both the Independent Auditor and the Khan Commission have confirmed that there are no funds missing from CSA’s accounts and the Annual Financial Statements (AFS) that were approved by the Board of Directors on Saturday have been given a clean audit without qualification. They reveal both record income and a record bottom line.
“We have concluded a number of highly compelling agreements with our commercial partners and we have been able to ensure that CSA’s finances remain healthy.
“Given the tough economic conditions that continue to prevail both in South Africa and globally, CSA is proud to have successfully concluded its best ever commercial deals, which will be announced shortly. This will afford us the comfort of knowing that adequate funding is in place for the foreseeable future.
“I believe that as CSA our voice and influence in the global game of cricket is a critical one as we have one of the richest heritages of this great sport. We have already demonstrated our leadership in many aspects of the game and we will continue to act as a hub for development and excellence in all aspects of the game and business of cricket.
“On a personal level, I am proud that as CEO of CSA my organisation has welcomed scrutiny of its affairs in such a clear and transparent manner. Although a costly and emotional exercise, it affirms our belief in an open, democratic style of leadership.
“I would like to thank cricket lovers throughout South Africa and abroad for the support they continue to give us. Let us all now focus on the season ahead and the next important series against Australia, under new team management, headed by World Cup winning coach, Gary Kirsten, with his new leadership team of Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla.
“This will be followed by series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
“We must make Australia and New Zealand pay for what they did to the Boks over the last two weeks!”
