Cape Town - The immediate focus for the Proteas is Friday's fourth Test match against England at the Wanderers, but Tuesday's announcement of a 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI series reminded of what an important year this is for South Africa in white ball cricket.

South Africa, 2-1 down in the Test series against England, only have three more Test matches to play in a year where the obvious priority is Australia's T20 World Cup in October.

While the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Faf du Plessis, Anrich Nortje and Dwaine Pretorius have been rested for the ODI series against England, they are likely to return for the three T20s, which take place from February 12-16.

Another familiar name that could be included in that squad is veteran speedster Dale Steyn.

Now 36 and retired from Test cricket, Steyn is still available for the Proteas in limited overs cricket and is an option for the year with the World Cup in mind.

Sport24 understands that Steyn, who most recently played for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, will be a name considered when the Proteas selection committee meets to discuss the T20 squad.

Chris Morris and Imran Tahir, meanwhile, are also understood to be in the running.

Morris has been ever-present for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League while Tahir, who also retired from ODI cricket after the World Cup, has not played competitively since December's Mzansi Super League.

The return of AB de Villiers, meanwhile, is also still a possibility with both Proteas coach Mark Boucher and captain Faf du Plessis having spoken publicly on their willingness to see him included for the T20 World Cup.
