Thursday's Day 1 action was slow-going for the disappointing crowd that turned up at the ground.
England amassed 224/4 in 90 overs, at a rate of 2.49/over as the wicket held no demons for Joe Root's visitors.
With Test cricket facing uncertain times ahead in the face of the more spectator-popular ODI and T20 versions, Pietersen was vocal on his Twitter account on Friday, writing: I’m afraid to say, that with everyone trying to find ways to keep/make Test Cricket the pinnacle of our sport...THIS WICKET IS A SHOCKER!
Pietersen played 104 Tests, 136 ODIs and 37 T20s for England, having been born in Pietermaritzburg.
