Cape Town - Proteas spinner Imran Tahir made Cricket World Cup history for South Africa with his selection for the 2019 tournament's opening match against England at the Oval on Thursday.

Tahir became the oldest South African to play in a World Cup match.
Prior to today, that honour belonged to Omar Henry who was 40 years and 39 days when he was picked to start against Sri Lanka in Wellington at the 1992 World Cup.
Henry scored 11 runs off 13 balls and recorded bowling figures of 10-0-31-1 as Sri Lanka won by 3 wickets.
Tahir, as of today, is 40 years and 64 days.
To celebrate the record, Tahir opened the bowling for the Proteas - and picked up the key wicket of Jonny Bairstow for a duck with the second ball of the match!
The record for the all-time oldest player ever to play a World Cup match belongs to Nolan Clark of the Netherlands who was 47 years and 257 days when he played against, ironically, South Africa, in Rawalpindi at the 1996 World Cup.
