Cape Town - The Cricket South Africa (CSA) board will meet in Johannesburg on Saturday to discuss the future of Proteas coach Ottis Gibson.
It is the first stage of the 2019 World Cup wash-up.
The Proteas, under the leadership of Gibson and captain Faf du Plessis, stumbled to a 7th-placed finish at the tournament.
It was a performance that drew harsh criticism from the public back in South Africa, with the Proteas the second team after Afghanistan to be mathematically eliminated from the tournament following losses to England, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand and Pakistan.
There is little time to dwell, however, with the Proteas off on a tour of India at the beginning of September that will include three T20Is and three Test matches.
It means that CSA must move swiftly in deciding on Gibson's future.
That process will begin this weekend.
Sport24 understands that the Proteas leadership including Du Plessis, Gibson and election convenor Linda Zondi, have presented reports to the board in the aftermath of the World Cup disappointment.
CSA CEO Thabang Moroe is currently in London at the ICC's annual conference, but he will be flying back to South Africa first thing on Friday morning.
All of Gibson and Zondi are expected to be present at the meeting to speak to their reports.
Gibson's contract is set to expire at the end of September and he has already expressed his desire to sign an extension.
Skipper Du Plessis also came out in support of Gibson following the World Cup, backing him to stay in his role until at least the 2020 World Cup in Australia towards the end of next year.
Zondi, meanwhile, has reached the end of his terms as convenor but he could be retained if the board takes the decision to make the post a full-time position.That, it is understood, will also form part of Saturday's discussions and if Zondi is retained he will be contracted until the 2023 World Cup in India.
