Southampton - Proteas speedster Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup and will be replaced by Beuran Hendricks.

The news was confirmed on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's clash against India at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Steyn, who was not active in Tuesday's training session, has not been able to recover from a shoulder injury he picked up while on IPL duty with the Royal Challengers Bangalore last month.

According to South African team doctor Mohammed Moosajee, Steyn had suffered a second shoulder injury since arriving in England with the World Cup.

For that reason, he was allowed to be replaced in the squad because the injury was different to the one he arrived at the tournament with.

"Dale's case has been unique," Moosajee said.

"The plan was always to get him ready for second or third game at World Cup, but once he started bowling in the UK he experienced a new discomfort that we call a shoulder impingement."

Moosajee confirmed that Steyn had consulted with an orthopedic surgeon in London and that he had received an injection in the hope of getting pain free, but eventually a decision had to be take.

"The champion bowler that Dale is, every effort was made to allow him to recover and get ready for this tournament," Moosajee said.

"Unfortunately this was not to be."

Hendricks is expected to arrive in England on Monday morning.
