Smith: I believe in my team

2011-03-07 13:19

Nagpur - Defiant South Africa captain Graeme Smith backed his team to succeed at the World Cup despite the capitulation against England which had his critics dusting off their 'chokers' accusations.

"I believe in this team...we have the opportunity to shape today & tomorrow and we will be there when it counts. Thanx to our loyal supporters," said Smith on Twitter on Monday.

"One thing is for sure...I'm not gonna admit to people's agendas...this team has something."

On Sunday, Smith hit back at claims his side had 'choked' after a dramatic six-run loss to England in Chennai.

Needing just 172 to win, they were cruising at 63 without loss. But they then lost three wickets for 19 runs and three more in the middle of their innings for no runs with the score on 124.

"That's not predictable at all, is it?" said a sarcastic Smith, when questioned about South Africa's composure under stress.

"Pressure? We've handled ourselves in some tough situations over the last few years. I don't think pressure is our weakness."

      Zandberg - 2011-03-07 13:41

Is a failure to complete school also choking?

      Sipho - 2011-03-07 14:27

ENUFF WITH THE CHOKERS TAG. wE DID NOT CHOKE. WE LOST A NOTHING MATCH. IF WE LOSE AT THE QUARTERS, SEMIS OR FINALS THIS TIME. THEN WE SHALL HANG EM HIGH. till THEN SUPPORT THE BOYS AND LETS WIN THIS CUP. WE CAN DO IT ALTOGETHER NOW. Nkosi Sikeli Afrika,...... nana nana nanaaa na na. Guys, LETS support Graeme - we wont be seeing him ever again captaining our beloved team :))))) See my HUGE SMILE. So lets pray he can win something and leave SA cricket a legacy and a leader?

      Ntsikei - 2011-03-07 15:37

Chokers will always be chokers until they Choke no more hahahahahaha..................@ failure to complete school, it's all about cash and nothing else........

      Tjakkie - 2011-03-07 15:41

So, whenever we lose a game, any game, some idiot is going to scream choker. I'd rather lose this one now, than winning all the prelims on a trot only to lose in the final. Please do not reveal your own low self esteem by screaming choker. In the process you may just swallow your tongue.......and choke to death!

      Suckerz - 2011-03-07 16:48

Lol, they would let any loser type a comment here, even the ones that are SO SPINELESS, that they would rather put some one down than stand up for their team. All you GUTLESS wussies that shout chokers, tell us who you support!

      Andrew Griffiths - 2011-03-07 18:22

I agree with Sipho. Save your original ideas for when and if we exit the tournament. The Proteas have a decent chance of winning the tournament. Important to beat India though and top the group so we play New Zealand (possibly) in the quarters.

      myjdjames - 2011-03-08 07:17

when will you learn that CHokers is being thrown away not because they lost a game (As they did many times in ODI's lately) but in the MANNER in which they lost it. Stop being so defensive. They are like untouchables and people get so upset when any criticism is thrown their way. Forget SA supporters calling them chokers, do a search on twitter and you'll see that the entire WORLD is calling them that. Best they stop defending themselves and let performances on the field do the talking. (and not vs Netherlands, WI or Ireland) -- the big guns.

      cammie - 2011-03-08 08:07

How tiremsome this inane comment has become!

  • pixleigh - 2011-03-07 13:31

To all the people who call our cricket team chokers - why do you bother watching if that's the way you feel about them? Why is only the SA team that gets called chokers when they lose? Other than Australia, the other top cricket sides in the world haven't held that cup very often. To the SA team - that's a game that any top team could have lost. You still have my support, all the way to the final. Good luck to all of you & ignore the idiots who love to throw around the word "choker", even when they can't spell it!

      Zandberg - 2011-03-07 13:39

      Agree 100%

      Bratt - 2011-03-07 13:46

Nice to see a die-hard fan. With that out of the way, let me explain. Of all the cricket teams in the world, the Proteas have the most potential and raw talent. This has been the case for decades. But the Proteas have nothing to show for it, especially in the big tournaments. This is why they get that unfortunate label. Compare them if you will, to the All Blacks when it comes to the Rugby World Cup.

      marco - 2011-03-07 13:56

@pixleigh Don't be so damn daft.Watching them has got nothing to do wth it.We pay good money to watch a team that wins worldcups and time and time again on each and every occasion ever since WCup 1992 they've failed miserably when it mattered most no matter what team gets put out there in SA colours.Enough is enough I say and I for one can't take this K@K the Proteas do in major competitions any longer and I bet most South Africans have such a view too.We want them to ****ing find out what is the root cause of the problem as to why such chokelike behaviour occurs and root it out once and for all as if it were a malignant melanoma boil.

      LUFC - 2011-03-07 14:14

Pixleigh its pretty simple - although this may apply to english football a bit more... if you support a team and your team under performs, you are paying their wages, you are buying their merchandise and paying their match fees - You've got the right to an opinion on it.

      BigD - 2011-03-07 14:58

We have no silver ware. Why?

      Grant - 2011-03-07 15:06

@Bratt - I agree with you to a certain extent. The difference between the Proteas and NZ Rugby, is that Proteas usually put up a good fight, and then just get screwed over by rain (against England) Bad umpiring and unfortunate rules (Draw against Aus)... NZ however, have nobody to blame but themselves for under-performing in crunch-matches. ;)

      iGlen! - 2011-03-07 15:06

It wasn't just because the Proteas lost a cricket match, it is the manner in which they lost the cricket match that makes them chokers.Having England at 15 for 3 after 3 overs then allowing them to score over 170 is a tad unforgivable! Then being 120 odd for 3 The Proteas should have cantered to a win, plenty of batting and plenty of overs remained! England we're called a "pub" side after losing to Ireland in the week, well, what are the Proteas then if they lose to the "pub" side. I support our boys, but it becomes difficult when they dish up that kind of rubbish, annihilating Netherlands and clobbering West Indies should not be viewed as successes! Its par for the course! Even Netherlands posted nearly 300 against England, Proteas managed ONLY half of what Ireland did! Its a CHOKE! luckily its only the 1st phase so we are still in it!

      Slapper - 2011-03-07 15:24

Its not so much what you do, its how you do it. Biff never did it for me.

      Ntsikei - 2011-03-07 15:53

@ Pixley and Your Fans: Dictionary meaning of a Choker: 2.An unfortunate person who is unable to perform effectively because of nervous tension or agitation; "he could win if he wasn't a choker"..............u can google it, what a sad excuse from U loyal supporters! the name was given to Proteas from the day we lost to Australia in the England CWC, with 1 wicket, 2 balls and S.A needed only 1 run to win the game.............Yesterday we needed less than 100 runs to win with 7 wickets..........what a Joke. Austtralia and other top 4 Countries loose with dignity ......... and not the way we tend to loose!

  • trindian786 - 2011-03-07 13:33

They don't need people who are unhappy with their own lives and justify their own failures by taking cheap shots at them. To GS I believe in the Proteas. VIVA PROTEAS VIVA

We are here, till infinity and beyond. Proteas forever.

  • Schweet - 2011-03-07 13:34

Won't say we choked, rather loss of focus at a small target made the batsmen play bad shot at crucial times (aka Amhla and Van wyk - not blaming them for the loss) and this on a shocker of track where even KP got huge spin, had we batted first we probably would have won comfortably (and i would have smiled on SB), but we should have beaten eng. The Boys will bounce back and hopefully more focused and hungry...

  • Zandberg - 2011-03-07 13:39

Not a single Protea supporter has called you guys chokers. We support, no matter if we are disappointed or if we differ on team selection, captaincy etc. Go boys! The rest of the commentators are just in here because this is the only place where they feel of some value.

      evereadydude - 2011-03-07 14:13

evereadydude. Then everybody you know are idiots. They did not choke. When we win, you say we will eventually choke and when we lose, you will say I told you so. Everybody will lose eventually. They had 2 easy games and then did not come too the party against England. I for one am glad it happened. Yesterday's match means nothing. For all I care, we can lose against India too. It doesn't matter if we are 1st or 4th in our pool. All we need to do is get to the Quater Finals. Thats when the World Cup really starts, because then in stead of waiting an entire week each time to play crap opposition in a meaningless match, we will play 3 very tricky games in 10 days on road to world cup glory. Getting this wake up call now was a good thing. Now our boys know that they are human and if they don't play, even a silly team like England can beat us. I still believe that India and Sri Lanka are favourites, but we can win this if we believe and if our supporters get some commin sense.

      Dros - 2011-03-07 14:40

  • TheWasp - 2011-03-07 13:57

Everyone just calm down for Gods sakes...... That pitch was a shocker and got worse for the side batting second - fact! The only problen here was poor middle order and for that I blame Andrew Husdon for selecting Morne Van Wyk and did nothing but try cut every shot. We needed experience which is what Boucher would have brought on Sunday, calm and collected he would have seen us through...... But there is still a long way to go, stop being so damn negative!!!!! You think the boys don't read this?

      Stephen - 2011-03-07 14:29

hope they do read this, then they will know what their succes or lack of it means to us ...their supporters. fact of the matter is with the talent we have we should have won silverware somewhere along the line, but we always seem to find a way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. We should have killed England...we did not that is a fact

      CharlSkeptic - 2011-03-07 14:29

The trouble came before Van wyk - he actually did well. Kallis "No Runs", Duminy "Getting Bowled AGAIN" and so on....

      fatpas - 2011-03-07 14:53

Van Wyk is batting way out of position, maybe that is why he didn't perform as he should have. Remember he opens the batting for OFS and he also opened the batting when he played in the matches recently against Pakistan and India. Perhaps they should try opening with him, and let Amla come in at 3 with the rest dropping one place down the order. Just a thought!

      stevemeister2011 - 2011-03-07 14:55

Did you see the ball that bowled Duminy?Van Wyk should have come in at number 3 when we had a platform to work with. They do have to sort out their tendency to collapse. When the second wicket fell at 124 why was no instructions sent to occupy the crease?

      Slapper - 2011-03-07 15:27

Hey Wasp, it was the same pitch for both sides. We were cruising to a massive win and we collapsed. As Selebi said, "Finish and Klaar

This is a bit of a pointless headline? If the captain doesn't believe then he shouldnt be there so he's really stating something very obvious. I've said it for about 10 years now.... take the mental side of cricket seriously. Until SA do, they'll continue to bottle games when the brain comes into play.

      Kevin King - 2011-03-07 15:30

Derrick, I believe he has won 60.69% ( 2nd place is Polly (62.24%). 1st place is Hansie (70.71%). And thanks for confirming, 2 hundreds in 5 years. Not looking for a scapegoat but if you look at the top four, AB, Amla, Smith and Kallis, you will clearly see who stands out as the weakest link.

  • - 2011-03-07 14:09

To the peanut gallery... the pitch was attrocious and it became more and more difficult to score on as the day went on. Some of Swanny's deliveries to Biff were completely unplayable. Yes, perhaps we should have and could have won, but we will make the quarters. THEN we will need to stand up when the pressure is on! Fully behind you Proteas. Jeez I'm sick of all these pessiments. - 2011-03-07 14:11

Oh yes, and Andrew Hudson must be regretting his decision to leave out Bouch now. AB is not even keeping and Bouch is giving the middle finger to the selectors with all his match-winning innings's over the past month. Time to fake an injury Parny or Colin?

      Kdub - 2011-03-07 14:27

Bouchers last few innings... 43... 3... 18.. 3... 20... 57... only 2 good scores... hardly a middle finger to the selectors...

      george.traut - 2011-03-07 15:04

kdub. Paddler said past month. Boucher is kicking ass at the moment and those last 5 scores aren't that bad. It's still an average of 28,8 which is good for a nr7 that is constantly being asked to do the impossible.

  • FastJan - 2011-03-07 14:26

We haven't won a cricket world cup so every SA cricketer is labelled a choker! So let's apply to the same to Bafana, Banyana, Man Utd in recent weeks, the Lions and the Boks if they don't win the world cup this year. The All Blacks also have the reputation for "choking" at the RWC - do you see a SINGLE Kiwi not supporting them? Get over yourselves and support whether we win or lose. Stop criticising from your armchair and for those of you who can't see a pitch where winning the toss is so vital, go learn about cricket before chirping. Expect to lose some games - this is the nature of sport. Be disappointed, be angry, be frustrated like all true supporters, but carry on supporting. Or pi$$ off, go play with Julius and nationalise Jukskei! Our team is just that "OURS".

      Gore - 2011-03-07 15:19

So in short, we should celebrate mediocre and under achievement. NO thanks!

      Bhafo - 2011-03-09 13:41

@ Gore you are the under achiever who compensates for his failures by diverting all attention from yourself to the Proteas loss. Why are you not in the starting 11 for England or SA yiu just never made the cut right.

  • - 2011-03-07 14:26

Capt Smith; Please stop talking and do something. Nobody in the history of cricket has won a major trophy in the newspaper. If you want to talk please do it with bat and ball. Once you have the cup in your hand you can arrange press conferences by the dozen and I will even committ to watch and read all you have to say. Now please get your team out of the press, away from the media and start playing cricket.

  • Weepee - 2011-03-07 14:26

Biff - clear up any agenda's we may have. 124 for 3 to 165 all out? 3 middle order batters gone without scoring a single run? Senior players tossing their wickets as in Kallis & Dumminy when we needed 3 runs an over? Face it Biff the moment we were 3 down there was no belief we could get there. We folded like a pack of cards. One player and only one player believed we could do it & that was Steyn and he showed it in his body language.

  • fatpas - 2011-03-07 14:29

Forget the chokers label. It was smart captaincy by Strauss in the way he used his bowlers and set his field that won them that game and it was the poor captaincy by Smith in the way he used his bowlers and set his field, that lost us that game

SA is the only side that will lose 9/10 times when placed under pressure . England tailenders hold us out to a draw . Pakistan rise from the dead in Dubai . India come 1-0 down to 2-1 up . We the most underachieved yet highest potential team .For every 1 time Smith can think of how they came out on top under pressure , I can give him 5 of them buckling

      Zandberg - 2011-03-07 15:50

Well England tailenders held Australia out in ashes series 2009. So then Australia are chokers too? We f****n beat the Indians 3-2. So winning a series against the No.1 ranked side in the world makes us chokers? We beat the Pakistani team 3-2 in UAE. Chokers? Go choke on your daily mothersmilk..

I will always believe in and support the Proteas. That said though, yesterday was not great but the teams knows that (or least they better know it!). What worries me is that our middle order was exposed for the first time. These are the chaps who need to close out matches (I believe that Boucher should be there but he's not so I'll move on). I'm concerned that not being able to close out a match against a very average English team who made a low total doesn't bode well for the more critical matches coming up. Steyn showed a batting attitude required in those situations so I hope that the batters have a chat with him. Good luck chaps!

Ranked 17th in the world ODI batting. 16th in Tests. Has captained in 145 ODI's, winning 88 (61%). The 11th best international captaincy of the last 20 years out of 80 international captains. Better than Alan Border, Akram, Younis, Sangakarra and MS Dhoni. (Just behind Pollock who was similarly reviled) Now go watch tiddleywinks and stop chirping!

@FastJan. Graeme has 8 centuries in about 168 innings. Amla has 8 centuries in 44 innings. AB has 11 centuries in 112 innings. So much for our captain... I can go on if u want me to. Smith just does not have alot of gey matter.

What Protea supporters have got to understand is that the label that your team has as chokers is well deserved. I am not a Smith supporter but at least he had the balls at the after-match to just say, "we were not good enough" Protea supporters and South African sports people seem to think that the sporting world owes them something, wake up, they dont and never will. The Radio 2000 people never considered that the Proteas could lose. They took all of the glory and put it down to "a superb effort from the team" they didnt consider for a second that Englands performance may have been a match winning one anyway. get rid of the culture of entitlement that you people have.

      FastJan - 2011-03-07 15:00

I too had the displeasure of listening to the entire match on radio 2000 as I was driving long distance. NEVER have I heard such a dismal bunch of commentators!!! Opinionated, pessimistic know-alls. Clearly SABC broadcasting going cheap and nasty. What happened to the days when TV commentators used to swap live from TV to radio and give us decent commentary?

  • sivad - 2011-03-07 14:57

good thinking Fatpas at last we have someone positive hip hip

  • Philip - 2011-03-07 14:57

Who cares what this choker thinks! They threw away the game. End of story. They choked. End of story. And yes I will call a choker a choker.

  • Keenan - 2011-03-07 15:03

I maintain Smith is useless and not a good captain. I will always support my country but Smith is a flop. Ya sure losing will occur at some point but this was the game all critics were watching bcoz the first 2 were against weak or average teams. SA was ranked no.1 not so long ago so the 'excuse' of coming into the WC as an underdog as some journalists announced is just a cover up incase they happen to fail, again, under Smith.

  • chiepner - 2011-03-07 15:03

I am glad our national captian can still crack a hint of sarcasm after he himself just showed the quality of form he finds himself in. It seems nepotism has become so intigrated in sunny SA that even our national captain whould feel at home behind a desk in the department of home affairs. Keep it up Gream! You obviously realised that you will be moving along shortly anyways so the fans can just go screw themselves.

  • Ben - 2011-03-07 15:09

All you "choker" label vendors. You're making a mountain of a mole's hill and building it out of stupid unfounded facts. read this. Clear and simple.

  • Slapper - 2011-03-07 15:22

That's good Biff, you believe in them, I dont and... I never believed in you, you are full of Bulls***

  • SG - 2011-03-07 15:25

The Protea's ego's are so beeeeg there4 they cannot win. Learn from the great Sachin how to have ur feet firmly on the ground and celebrate after ur'll WIN. Tahir OMG do u have to fly like an aeroplane everytime u take a wicket, bhai u never win the world cup for SA yet, so take a pill n chill Paki power.

      Zandberg - 2011-03-07 15:55

Im sorry, but when did Sachin lift the World Cup? Must have been when WG Grace played, because I can't recall.

  • chris.geosearch - 2011-03-07 15:30

If Smith reads these, can he answer two simple questions: Why did you take Petersen off when he had 3 wickets for 4 runs in 4 overs? What was your thinking behind what appears to be a completely insane decision? Why did you drop Duminy down the order below van Wyk, rather than sending him in while Swann still had three overs? What was the thinking behind picking a front line batsmen who you obviously realise is utterly incapable of playing against England's spinners? Do you 'believe' in Duminy too? Do you plan to keep dropping him as long as the opposition spinners have overs left? If so, are you aware that England are not the only team in the WC with spinners?

      chris.geosearch - 2011-03-07 15:31

Hmmm - that ended up being more than two - sorry for getting carried away!

  • Barry - 2011-03-07 16:03

Dont write them off this happens to anyone i stand fully behind our guys and know that this is just a good learning curve Come on SA stand up for the team they will give their best

  • Clint - 2011-03-07 16:09

Just my five cents - What did the bookies make on that surprise result? Makes one think what's going on here. Graeme must go!!!!

  • Fikile - 2011-03-07 16:44

CAPTAIN BOFF, the question is does your team believe in you. You let England get away, I have told you before, if you have your foot on the oppositions throat sqeez harder not lift your foot.

  • Clarence - 2011-03-07 17:00

You can't permanently rely on Amla, De Villiers and one or two middle orders. You're just making it unnecessary difficult for the Proteas. Why only want to shape when it "counts". Have you been been able to pull your socks against England, it would have been so much easier later. Amen

  • abrham - 2011-03-07 17:34

believe = trust in something not tangeble

  • Clarence - 2011-03-07 17:42

It is so so sad. After England's score you had it on a plate. But so sad. You can't keep on relying on Amla, De Villiers and the odd other batsman. And why did you take Peterson off the bowling? Unbelievable! It's fine that you believe in your team, but shucks, why did you not make it count vs England. It could have been so much easier later on. Amen

  • Maddi - 2011-03-07 17:58

do we just support the team when they are winning? That was an incredibly difficult pitch and sh*t happens. I don't like Smith, never have, but he is the captain, MY captain and as such I will support him and our team no matter what. Nobody likes losing, but I will still wear my Protea jersey with pride.

  • Yusuf Khader - 2011-03-08 00:39

the problem here smith is that you are relying on amla and de villiers. it's time so of the other batsmen including you contributed.

  • myjdjames - 2011-03-08 07:18

correction: CHokers is being thrown AROUND (not away)

  • Pedro - 2011-03-08 09:03

This choking story has become boring!
