Cook ton powers England

Kolkata - An unbeaten 136 for England's captain, Alastair Cook, set the tone as the visitors reached 216 for one at stumps on the second day in the third Test against India here on Thursday.

Scorecard: India v England

According to the supersport.com website, Cook and Nick Compton added 165 for the opening stand, before the latter was adjudged leg before for a patient 57 - his maiden test half-century.

Pragyan Ojha appealed as Compton tried the paddle-sweep, and, bizarrely, umpire Rod Tucker shook his head before lifting his finger.

At the close of play, Jonathan Trott was on 21, as England still trail the hosts by 100 runs.

Earlier, England were 121 without loss at tea.

Cook (80 not out) and Compton (41 not out) survived 11 overs before the lunch break after England dismissed India for 316, and added 99 runs in the afternoon.

Dhoni finished with 52 runs, the last man to lose his wicket.

Resuming on 273 for seven, Monty Panesar bagged the wickets of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in consecutive overs for figures of 4-90.
