Super Over agony for Lions

Jaipur - Quinton de Kock became the second South African after Richard Levi to score two T20 centuries and followed it up with 12 runs off four balls in the Super Over but it was not enough to get the Highveld Lions over the line in their final Group A match in the Champions League T20 on Sunday.

The Otago Volts from New Zealand tied the Lions at 167 runs each and then posted 13 runs batting first in the Super Over. De Kock looked as though he had clinched the match when he hit the first three balls from the Volts batting hero, Jimmy Neesham, for 4, 6 and 1 but then his partner, Jean Symes, was out off the next ball. De Kock took a single off the fifth delivery but Dwayne Pretorius was only able to score a single off the final delivery before being run out.

With the scores again tied the Volts won the match on the countback in the final over with Brendon McCullum having hit a six off the final ball in their Super Over.

De Kock at least had the satisfaction of finally getting a major score under his belt on the subcontinent after a disappointing spell earlier this year with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. He scored a fairly sedate 42 off the first 36 balls he faced but then cut loose to score 67 off his next 27 deliveries to finish unbeaten on 109. In all he hit 10 fours and five sixes off the 63 balls that he faced.

The Lions seemed to have the match well under control as they took wickets at regular intervals with Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Imran Tahir claiming two each but the Volts had the man for the moment in Neesham who smashed an unbeaten 52 off 25 balls with two fours and four sixes.

The Lions thus finish with two points from one washed out game against three defeats while the Volts, with 10 points, remain in the running for a semi-final position.
