Cape Town - CSA has announced that Proteas Test captain, Graeme Smith, will miss the 2011 Airtel Champions League, taking place in India from September 23 to October 9 2011.
The Proteas medical team have withdrawn Smith as a precaution, after he underwent arthroscopic surgery to his right knee on Friday July 15.
"Graeme has been given a six to eight week recovery period after a successful surgery on Friday. His knee injury is an old one that was aggravated during the IPL and the surgeon successfully managed to debride the cartilage thought to be causing the problem in his right knee.
"Although his rehabilitation period will be over by the time the Champions League commences, we feel that he will not be match ready at the time. He will now undergo a guided rehabilitation programme in the coming weeks and hopefully he will recover in time for the start of a very busy International summer," said Team Manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee.
Smith injured his knee during the 2011 Indian Premier League in April while playing for the Pune Warriors and has been out of action since then.
He would have played for the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras at this year's event.
