CSA pay tribute to Gordon

Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa on Saturday saluted Norman Gordon on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

Norman Gordon, who was better known by his nickname, ‘Mobil’ was born in Boksburg on August 6, 1911, and represented South Africa in all 5 Test matches, including the famous ‘Timeless Test’, against England during the 1938-39 season.

In a series that was completely dominated by the batsmen with only one match producing a result he opened the bowling and collected 2 five-wicket hauls. His total of 20 wickets was more than any other bowler on either side.

He would have been a key bowler for South Africa on the planned tour of 1940 which was cancelled on the outbreak of World War II.

“We send Norman our heartiest congratulations on reaching a splendid landmark,” commented CSA CEO Gerald Majola, “and wish him good health and happiness.

“I know I can speak on behalf of the entire South African cricket community in wishing you and your family everything of the best.”

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
