CSA names training squad

Cape Town - Thirteen of South Africa’s most promising young spin bowlers and batsmen left for India on Monday to participate in a high level training camp in Bangalore

The squad consists of six spinners, six batsmen and one fast bowler.

The aim of the camp is to ensure that these talented players are exposed to different playing conditions as well as giving them vital experience as part of their career development and growth.

Cricket South Africa’s general manager: cricket, Corrie Van Zyl, believes that this opportunity is crucial for the players at this stage of their careers.

“We have selected the most talented young spin bowlers and talented black African batsmen for this camp,” said Van Zyl.

“While the Proteas and the SA ‘A’ team are currently abroad, those waiting in the wings will have the opportunity to further hone their skills before the start of the domestic season.

“We identified some of the most talented Black African batsmen in an attempt to further develop their skill set. We want to develop their skill of playing spin bowling on spin friendly wickets which will stand them in good stead for the future,” Van Zyl added.

Van Zyl also confirmed that former Proteas’ left-arm spinner, Nicky Boje, will accompany the squad. This is due to the resignation of CSA’s High Performance Spin Consultant, Paul Adams, who was recently appointed as coach of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras.

“I’m also happy to have someone as experienced as Nicky on board. He is a fantastic person to mentor our next generation of spinners and we look forward to calling upon his expertise to ensure proper development of our spin bowlers,” explained Van Zyl.

The following players will form the spin bowling group:

Dane Piedt (Cape Cobras)
Siya Simetu (Cape Cobras)
Eddie Leie (Highveld Lions)
Simon Harmer (Warriors)
Shaun Von Berg (Titans)
Tabraiz Shamsi (Dolphins)

Fast bowler:

Ayavuya Myoli (Border)

The following players will form the batting group:

Khaya Zondo (Dolphins)
Omphile Ramela (Highveld Lions)
Grant Mokoena (Highveld Lions)
Tumelo Bodibe (Titans)
Mangeliso Mosehle (Titans)
Luthando Mnyanda (SWD)

The camp will last nine days and these players will be taken through their paces by legendary coaches such as Sunil Joshi and Umesh Patwal who is also the director the Global Cricket Academy in Mumbai, India, which CSA has successfully used in the past.
