Johannesburg - Cricket SA (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola was suspended on Saturday, CSA board member Oupa Nkagisang said.
A unanimous decision was taken by the CSA board, who met in Johannesburg on Saturday, to suspend Majola for one year on full pay or pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing, as recommended by the Nicholson inquiry.
North West Cricket Association’s CEO Jacques Faul has been appointed CSA's acting chief executive until the outcome of the hearing.
"After lengthy deliberation, the board resolved unanimously to rescind all decisions pertaining to the findings of the Khan Commission," said Nkagisang.
Spokesperson for the board, Ray Mali, who chaired the board meeting, said Majola had applied for a leave of absence but a decision had already been taken to follow the recommendations of retired judge Chris Nicholson.
"Gerald did apply for [a leave of absence] but the CSA board felt that it was not going to grant him that,” Mali said after the board meeting.
"Hence we had already committed ourselves to the Nicholson process."
The make-up of the disciplinary inquiry will be announced on March 30 at the board's next meeting.
“It is in the best interests that the person is independent,” said Mali.
