Proteas sweat on JP's fitness

Johannesburg - The Proteas led a composite South African XI by 312 runs at stumps on the second day of the three-day warm-up match at the Wanderers Stadium.

The composite XI was bowled out for 135 runs, with Quinton de Kock (50) the only batsman to counter the Proteas' attack.

Dale Steyn eased back into his bowling rhythm after a month on the sidelines with a rib injury, and picked up 3/40 at moderate speeds.

The rest of the bowlers also chipped in, with Robin Peterson (3/9) and Rory Kleinveldt (2/17) the other top wicket-takers.

Proteas bowling coach, Allan Donald, was pleased with the way the attack performed.

The only negative for the Proteas was JP Duminy retiring hurt with a sore wrist.

Team management said further assessment would be made on Thursday.

"Im very happy with the whole group," Donald said.

" It was a good workout, nice time on the legs . When you prepare for a Test series, time on the legs and some mileage in terms of balls bowled is absolutely crucial.

"Hopefully the weather holds up for us tomorrow so that we can finish with a spell or two, especially Vernon (Philander), Morne (Morkel) and Dale (Steyn)."

Faf du Plessis (67) and Vernon Philander (7) were the batsmen at the crease and would resume on Thursday with the score on 147 for five.
